Il libro argomenta che il socialismo è la gestione democratica delle imprese da parte dei lavoratori. Esso parte dalla considerazione che l’idea di Marx che capitalismo e mercato siano sinonimi non sia accettabile, perché, come dice Schumpeter, il mercato, liberato dal dominio del capitale, è un’istituzione assolutamente democratica. L’idea di un sistema d’imprese democratiche (cioè gestite dai lavoratori che in esse operano), a giudizio dell’autore, è conforme al pensiero marxista, perché la gestione democratica delle imprese capovolge, e quindi supera, la contraddizione fondamentale del capitalismo, che è la contraddizione, il contrasto, tra capitale e lavoro. L’impresa gestita dai lavoratori di cui il libro parla è la LMF di Vanek, l’impresa che tiene distinti i redditi di capitale dai redditi di lavoro, perché tutto il capitale in esse è capitale di prestito. Un sistema d’imprese gestite dai lavoratori ha una serie numerosa di pregi rispetto al capitalismo, primo fra tutti la maggior efficienza delle imprese, dovuta all’interesse dei soci-lavoratori al maggior guadagno. Un’idea centrale del libro è che un sistema d’imprese democratiche è destinato ad affermarsi necessariamente col tempo, perché la storia alla lunga ha una direzione, che è quella di accrescere sempre più il controllo dell’uomo sull’ambiente in cui vive.

Arthur Spiethoff (1873–1957), an economist of the German Historical School of Economics, is best known for his theory of the business cycle. Despite Spiethoff calling for a unified reading of his work, his epistemological thinking has received less attention. This book addresses that gap by analysing Spiethoff’s theory of the business cycle in the light of his epistemological views. Putting Spiethoff’s work in context, the book also investigates the most significant features of the evolution of the “research programme” of the German Historical School of Economics, with particular reference to the relationships between Schmoller, Sombart, Weber and Spiethoff. In addition, Spiethoff’s work is compared with some of the scientific orientations of the current debates: on the epistemological side, the book examines the relationship between Spiethoff’s views and some contemporary thinking on scientific realism, as well as methodological pluralism in social sciences. And, more broadly, it emphasises the analytical relevance of the historical approach in explaining the economic imbalances of contemporary capitalism, questioning the idea, widespread in the neoclassical approach, that taking historical specificities into account makes it hard to achieve a theoretically effective attitude. This book is a significant addition to the literature on the German Historical School of Economics and the history of economic thought, business cycle theory and macroeconomics more broadly.

Eminent Italian historian Giovanni Levi once notably remarked that “no one is a Marxist anymore,” pointing to a paradox in Italian cultural history. While what is called "Marxism" was supposedly hegemonic over Italian culture, and especially history writing, for decades in the postwar period, it then seems to have suddenly disappeared. This study questions such a vision of a monolithic and hegemonic Marxism. It starts from the most effective anecdote to all ideologising narratives—that is, research into the texts themselves. It sees the Marxist historiography of the post-1945 period as a "history in the making," in which references to Marxian theory were a fundamental factor driving historiographical innovation. Agricultural Economists in Early Twentieth-Century Italy describes how Italian agricultural economists collected information about the economy of Italy, between the Giolittian and the Fascist era. The book carefully describes three main forms of economic observation: enquiries, statistics, and farm surveys. For each of these forms of observation, the main participants to the investigation are discussed with their respective agendas, alongside the purposes of the investigation, and its practical constraints. This work introduces the concept of "stakeholder statistics", and stresses the two-way relation between the observer and the observed in the co-production of observational knowledge. Practices of observation developed together with agricultural economics as a discipline and a profession. The study of forms of investigation therefore shed light on the constitution of a coherent and self-conscious group of agricultural economists in Italy, and the scientific and methodological alliances they forged with agricultural economists elsewhere in Europe. Thanks to ambitious research projects, Ghino Valenti in the Giolittian period, and Arrigo Serpieri, after the First World War, led the transformation of Italian agricultural economists from agents of estate owners, to social and economic experts in the service of the Italian state. The group of agricultural economists who gathered around Serpieri played an important role in supplying the ideology of the agricultural elites with economic content, especially after the First World War, along lines that resemble the development of agrarian ideologies in other countries of Central Europe. This work discusses how observation entered the political debate on agricultural policies of the Fascist regime, namely the so-called Ruralismo.
