Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

Excerpt from Margot's Progress A persistent, jarring tremor ran through the framework of the White Star liner Majestic as her engines forced her across the grey-blue expanse of sea which now separated the great ship from the port of Cherbourg. It was almost as though the Majestic were herself excited by the prospect of reaching the gateway of France on this April morning, as excited as one, at least, of the passengers she carried. Maggie Carter lay back in her chair, shading her eyes with her hand. She did this, not to protect them from the sun, but because she was afraid their shining would betray her secret. She did not wish anyone to guess what this moment meant to her. It was the climax of so many dreams in the back street of the great Canadian city where she had spent most of her life, that the occasion was one which called for the completest privacy. She wanted to enjoy it all by herself, and when she saw the quaint backs of Mr. and Mrs. Falkenheim in the distance - the unromantic good fairies who were making everything possible - she begged her stars that they would keep away. She wanted to be alone with her daydreams, with the long, long thoughts of sweet-and-twenty, when she sees the cage-door suddenly ajar. A nice American boy in the chair next to hers had first to be sharply dealt with before she had peace. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. ‘Don’t think, dear’ said Balanchine. ‘Just do.’ For centuries, being a ballerina has been synonymous with being beautiful, thin, obedient and feminine. It is the crucible of womanhood, together with the harassment, physical abuse and eating disorders endemic at top schools. Can we abide this in a post #MeToo world? Weaving together her own time at America’s most elite ballet school with the lives of renowned ballerinas throughout history, Alice Robb interrogates what it means to perform ballet today. She confronts the all-consuming nature of the form: the obsessive and dangerous practices to perfect the body, the embrace of submission and the idealisation of suffering. Yet ballet also gifts its dancers ‘brains in their toes’, a way to fully inhabit their bodies and a sanctuary of control away from the pressures of the outside world. Perhaps it is time to reimagine its liberating potential.

The Sexual Subject written by Mandy Merck and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-05 with Social Science categories.

The Sexual Subject brings together writing on sexuality which has appeared in ^Screen> over the past two decades. It reflects the journal's continuing engagement with questions of sexuality and signification in the cinema, an engagement which has had a profound influence on the development of the academic study of film and on alternative film and video practice. The collection opens with Laura Mulvey's classic "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" with its conjunction of semiotics and psychoanalysis, the critical approach which is most closely associated with Screen's rise to international prominence. The reader then goes on to explore the particular questions and debates which that conjuction provoked: arguments around pornography and the represenation of the body: questions of the representation of femininity and masculinity, of the female spectator, and of the social subject. Many of the writings in this Reader have become indispensable texts within the study of film. The purpose of the Reader is not only to make the articles available to a wider readership, and to a new generation, but also to pose new conjunctions, making connections in one volume between debates and inquiries which spanned two crucial decades of film theory. The Sexual Subject is intended not only for all those with a particular interest in film and film theory, but for anyone with a serious commitment to cultural theory, theories of representation, and questions of sexuality and gender.
