I vangeli apocrifi contengono una ricca galleria di «donne dimenticate», protagoniste di un cristianesimo perduto – la Gnosi – nell’ambito del quale erano sacerdotesse e maestre e il femminile veniva venerato come un principio divino. È una verità storica che suscita un interesse crescente perché permette di rispondere a molti interrogativi legati al cristianesimo delle origini. Gli gnostici non si misero in competizione con i cristiani rivendicando un’origine comune rispetto alla Chiesa dei primi secoli, ma si fecero discendere da figure secondarie come Giacomo il Giusto e Tommaso, Maria Maddalena e Salomè. Non è un caso che queste ultime siano donne, perché una delle maggiori novità in ambito gnostico è proprio la radicale rivalutazione dell’elemento femminile all’interno della mitologia religiosa giudaico-cristiana e dell’immaginario collettivo. Accanto alla Maddalena, a Salomè, Eva, Norea, Maria di Nazareth vanno anche ricordate le diverse identità femminili assunte dal Dio dello Spirito gnostico: da Barbelo a Bronte, da Sophia a Elena, fino a Lilith, la donna-demone. La portata di questo cambiamento culturale fu dirompente e forse spiega l’ostilità a cui la Gnosi andò incontro e l’oblio a cui fu condannata.
