Geschichte Alexanders des Großen ist eine detaillierte Biografie über Alexander III. von Makedonien (356 v. Chr. - 323 v. Chr.). Alexander dehnte die Grenzen des Reiches, das sein Vater Philipp II. aus dem vormals eher unbedeutenden Kleinstaat Makedonien sowie mehreren griechischen Poleis errichtet hatte, durch den sogenannten Alexanderzug und die Eroberung des Achämenidenreichs bis an den indischen Subkontinent aus. Nach seinem Einmarsch in Ägypten wurde er dort als Pharao begrüßt. Johann Gustav Droysen betonte die Geschichte Alexanders des Großen aus seiner Sicht positiven kulturellen Folgen von Alexanders Politik einer "Völkervermischung" statt einer bloßen makedonischen Herrschaft über unterworfene Barbaren. Er lobte die Wirtschaftspolitik, die Städtegründungen und die Förderung der Infrastruktur und meinte, auf religiösem Gebiet habe Alexanders Politik die Entstehung einer Weltreligion vorbereitet. Dieser Sichtweise war eine starke Nachwirkung beschieden. Den Ausgangspunkt der modernen wissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzung mit Alexander bildete die "Geschichte Alexanders des Großen" von Droysen. Johann Gustav Bernhard Droysen (1808-1884) war ein deutscher Historiker. Droysen stellte sich bereits mit seinem Erstlingswerk Geschichte Alexanders des Großen 1833 in die erste Reihe der Historiker seiner Zeit. Den Begriff "Hellenismus" erhob er zur Epochenbezeichnung für die Zeit zwischen Alexander und Kleopatra. Später arbeitete er auf dem Gebiet der neueren Geschichte.
