Les Tsiganes, mieux connus en France sous le nom de Gitans, vivent parmi nous depuis mille ans environ. Ils communiquent avec nous, ils parlent notre langue, la plupart d’entre eux ont la citoyenneté de notre pays, avec les devoirs et les obligations qui en découlent (impôts, service militaire, droit de vote, scolarisation, prestations familiales). Pourtant, ils ne nous ressemblent en rien. Ils refusent - ils ont toujours refusé obstinément et systématiquement - de nous ressembler en quoi que ce soit. Notre culture, aussi riche et généreuse qu’elle puisse être, n’a aucun attrait pour eux : ils n’en veulent point. Et il en est de même de notre mode de vie. Ils forment donc un petit monde à part, au milieu d’un monde, le nôtre, aux dimensions quasi infinies qui, normalement, devrait les absorber, les aspirer, ce que du reste il s’efforce de faire, prétendument dans l’intérêt propre des Tsiganes, mais sans le moindre succès. Pourquoi ? Quelles sont les raisons de cette extrême particularisation, de ce constant refus d’intégration, de cette persévérance dans un être défini une fois pour toutes ? Si on les interroge là-dessus, les Tsiganes refusent également de répondre. C’est donc à nous de chercher une réponse. Elle est importante. Elle a une grande signification humaine. Cependant, ne pouvant nous baser - à cause de leur mutisme prémédité - que sur leur comportement collectif et individuel, nous restons dans ce travail nécessairement au niveau des hypothèses, nous nous contentons d’interpréter tant bien que mal ce comportement. Konstantin Stoyanovitch, qui a souvent côtoyé des Tsiganes dans sa jeunesse, a tenté ici ce genre de recherche, en esquissant une théorie de l’être socio-humain de cette ethnie. Les contours de cet être lui semblent mieux dessinés, plus nets, que ceux des peuples évolués.
