C'est une introduction originale à l'histoire de la colonisation française que propose Gilles Manceron dans cet essai inédit. On sait que ces dernières années, des revendications se sont élevées, pour exiger des réparations, voire des poursuites judiciaires, pour les crimes de la colonisation : quelles réponses apporter aujourd'hui à ces revendications ? Pour répondre à cette question, Gilles Manceron, revient sur les crimes massifs et organisés qui ont accompagné la colonisation pendant plusieurs siècles, depuis la traite esclavagiste jusqu'aux indépendances. Et il montre comment, à partir du XIXe siècle, ces crimes ont été systématiquement déniés, par un discours officiel selon lequel les notions d'égalité et de droits de l'homme admettraient une exception : celle des peuples colonisés, " mineurs et barbares ", qui ne pouvaient prétendre en bénéficier. Ce discours, qui fut celui des IIIe, IVe et Ve Républiques, a été abandonné après les indépendances. Mais, depuis, les autorités de la République n'ont jamais reconnu les crimes de la colonisation, ni désavoué le discours officiel antérieur. À partir de cette confrontation entre la réalité de la violence coloniale et le discours qui la légitimait, Gilles Manceron montre que ce n'est pas par d'hypothétiques procès ou réparations financières que ces pages noires de l'histoire de France seront définitivement tournées, mais par un effort de vérité politique et historique auquel ce livre entend contribuer.

Civilizing Habits explores the life stories of three French women missionaries--Philippine Duchesne, Emilie de Vialar, and Anne-Marie Javouhey--who crossed boundaries, both real and imagined, to evangelize far from France's shores. In so doing, they helped France reestablish a global empire after the dislocation of the Revolution and the fall of Napoleon. They also pioneered a new missionary era in which the educational, charity, and health care services provided by women became valuable tools for spreading Catholic influence across the globe. Philippine Duchesne traveled to former French territory in Missouri in 1818 to proselytize among Native Americans. Thwarted by the American policy of removing tribes even further west, she turned her attention to girls' education on the frontier. Emilie de Vialar followed French troops to Algeria after its conquest and opened missions throughout the Mediterranean basin in the mid-nineteenth century. Prevented from direct evangelization, she developed strategies and subterfuges for working among Muslim populations. Anne-Marie Javouhey evangelized among Africans in the French slave colonies, including a utopian settlement in the wilds of French Guiana. She became a rare Catholic proponent of the abolition of slavery and a woman designated a "great man" by the French king. Paradoxically, through embracing religious institutions designed to shield their femininity, these women gained increased authority to travel outside France, challenge church power, and evangelize among non-Christians, all roles more commonly ascribed to male missionaries. Their stories teach us about the life paths open to religious women in the nineteenth century and how both church and state benefitted from their initiative to expand the boundaries of faith and nation.

The relationship between power and language has been a central theme in critical theory for decades now, yet there is still much to be learned about the sheer force of language in the world in which we live. In Empire of Language, Laurent Dubreuil explores the power-language phenomenon in the context of European and, particularly, French colonialism and its aftermath. Through readings of the colonial experience, he isolates a phraseology based on possession, in terms of both appropriation and haunting, that has persisted throughout the centuries. Not only is this phraseology a legacy of the past, it is still active today, especially in literary renderings of the colonial experience—but also, and more paradoxically, in anticolonial discourse. This phrase shaped the teaching of European languages in the (former) empires, and it tried to configure the usage of those idioms by the "Indigenes." Then, scholarly disciplines have to completely reconsider their discursive strategies about the colonial, if, at least, they attempt to speak up.Dubreuil ranges widely in terms of time and space, from the ancien régime through the twentieth century, from Paris to Haiti to Quebec, from the Renaissance to the riots in the banlieues. He examines diverse texts, from political speeches, legal documents, and colonial treatises to anthropological essays, poems of the Négritude, and contemporary rap, ever attuned to the linguistic strategies that undergird colonial power. Equally conversant in both postcolonial criticism and poststructuralist scholarship on language, but also deeply grounded in the sociohistorical context of the colonies, Dubreuil sets forth the conditions for an authentically postcolonial scholarship, one that acknowledges the difficulty of getting beyond a colonialism—and still maintains the need for an afterward.
