During the summer of 1987 socially and economically disadvantaged students from the inner city high schools of Miami, Florida were placed in laboratory positions at three oceanographic institutions on Virginia Key, Miami, Florida. Students received direct supervision from faculty members at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS) and from staff scientists at the Atlantic Oceanographic Marine Laboratory (AOML) and the Southeast Fisheries Center (SEFC). This program provided these students an opportunity to work in a scientific environment and to appraise career opportunities in oceanographic science. Capt. Alper Tunga Anıker is a maritime pilot serving in the Gulf of Izmit in Turkey. His newly published book, "Shiphandling with Azimuthing Podded Propulsors" bridges a gap in the maritime publications on shiphandling. zimuth thrusters is a configuration of marine propellers placed in pods that can be rotated to any horizontal angle (azimuth), making a rudder unnecessary. These give ships better maneuverability than a fixed propeller and rudder system. Azimuthing podded propulsors has been popular on modern passenger ships and purpose built ships as well as modern tugboats and working boats. However, a book on the shiphandling of such vessels was missing so far.
