Marine fungi play a major role in marine and mangrove ecosystems. Understanding how higher fungi with their spectrum of cellulolytic and ligninolytic enzymes degrade wood tissue, while labyrinthuloids and thraustochytrids further contribute to the dissolved organic matter entering the open ocean is essential to marine ecology. This work provides an overview of marine fungi including morphology and ultrastructure, phylogeny, biogeography and biodiversity. Increasingly, biotechnology is also turning to these organisms to develop new bioactive compounds and to address problems such as decomposition of materials in the ocean and bioremediation of oil spills. These potential applications of marine fungi are also treated. In the light of massive marine oil spills in the past years, the importance of understanding marine fungi and their role in the food chain cannot be underestimated.

This updated and expanded second edition reviews numerous aspects of the marine microbiome and its possible industrial applications. The marine microbiome is the total of microorganisms and viruses in the ocean and seas and in any connected environment, including the seafloor and marine animals and plants. In the first part of the book, diversity, origin and evolution of the marine microorganisms and viruses are discussed. The microbes presented originate from all three domains of life: Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya. The second part sheds some light on the different communities: it describes marine habitats and how their inhabitants control biogeochemical cycles. The third part finally examines the microbial ocean as a global system and evaluates methods of utilizing marine microbial resources. Adopting a translational approach, the book connects academic research with industrial applications, making it a fascinating read and valuable resource for microbiologists from both domains.

The oceans and the marine environment, covering about 70% of the earth, are critically important to humans. Marine biology provides an understanding of the various organisms that inhabit this essential ecosystem. Recently, biologists encompassing a broad interdisciplinary community of researchers and industrialists have gained enormous interest in understanding the enigmas of survival, the food web, primary production, natural products, interactions and competition, communication, reproduction, evolution, diversity, fouling and many other aspects pertaining to the marine ecosystem. This book encompasses original and internationally significant contributions from all fields of marine biology that promote understanding of the current marine environment and its life forms. It offers insights from a range of scientific sub-disciplines, and will prove beneficial for students, researchers, scientists and industrialists. It addresses topics such as bioremediation, authentication, biodiversity, as well as commercial utility.

This book presents a comprehensive overview and analysis of mangrove ecological processes, structure, and function at the local, biogeographic, and global scales and how these properties interact to provide key ecosystem services to society. The analysis is based on an international collaborative effort that focuses on regions and countries holding the largest mangrove resources and encompasses the major biogeographic and socio-economic settings of mangrove distribution. Given the economic and ecological importance of mangrove wetlands at the global scale, the chapters aim to integrate ecological and socio-economic perspectives on mangrove function and management using a system-level hierarchical analysis framework. The book explores the nexus between mangrove ecology and the capacity for ecosystem services, with an emphasis on thresholds, multiple stressors, and local conditions that determine this capacity. The interdisciplinary approach and illustrative study cases included in the book will provide valuable resources in data, information, and knowledge about the current status of one of the most productive coastal ecosystem in the world.

The diversity, ecological role and biotechnological applications of marine fungi have been addressed in numerous scientific publications in the last few years. This enormous spurt of information has led to a dire need among students and professionals alike for a source, which contains comprehensive reviews of various aspects of marine fungi. This book addresses this need, especially since it is written by reputed marine mycologists. The latest information on topics including molecular taxonomy and phylogeny, ecology of fungi in different marine habitats such as deep sea, corals, dead- sea, fungi in extreme marine environments and their biotechnological applications is reviewed. The book presents a comprehensive source of information and analysis aimed at marine fungi for researchers, teachers and students of marine mycology.

Mangrove fungi are vastly unexplored for enzymes with industrial application. In this study, the diversity and xylanase production of mangrove fungi were assessed from decaying leaves collected in four provinces of Luzon. Twenty six morphospecies identified as belonging to the genera Acremonium, Alternaria, Aspergillus, Aureobasidium, Bipolaris, Chrysosporium, Cladosporium, Colletotrichum, Curvularia, Fusarium, Guignardia, Nigrospora, Paecilomyces, Penicillium, Pestalotiopsis, Philalophora, Phoma, Phomopsis and Phytophthora were isolated from brown and yeallow leaves. Highest colonization rates were noted in Zambales and in brown leaves. Highest, the leaf samples from Quezon and Rhizophora apiculata had the highest species diversity. Similarities in species composition were also noted between the collection sitesand the host mangroves. Xylanase production of the mangrove fungal strains was also tested. Eight selected MF strains produced crude xylanases with a maximum activity of 88-180 U/ml, generally after 4 incubation days. Majority of the crude xylanases were optimally active at neutral pH and 50°C. They were highly stable at pH 7 and at 35-50°C. All crude xyllanases also exhibited cellulase activities amounting to 4-21 U/ml. Finally, the eight crude xylanases released 70-650 mg of reducing sugars per gram of pulp at 50°C after 60 minutes, indicating their potential application as possible bleach boosters in pulp bleaching processes. This is the first and most comprehensive study on higher marine fungi associated with decaying mangrove leaves in the Philippines and the first attempt to quantify and characterize xylanases from locally isolated mangrove fungi.
