In 2015, nearly 30% of individuals aged 50 and older had two or more marriages compared to 19% in 1980, indicating that a growing share of older adults either divorced or were widowed during early or midlife and later remarried. Although widowhood remains a common exit from marriage in later life, divorce to people over 50 is also on the rise. Despite increasingly complex marital biographies of older adults, few researchers have examined differences between disruption pathways (i.e., one divorce, one widowhood, or multiple disruptions) and whether remarriage is associated with fewer costs of marital disruption. It is also unclear whether duration remarried or unmarried relates to better or worse health after different disruption pathways. Using the 1992-2014 Health and Retirement Study, I investigate the associations of different disruption pathways, subsequent remarriage relative to being unmarried, and duration remarried or unmarried with older adults' mental and physical health, contact with children, and ambivalence toward children. I also account for gender differences as the health and parent-child ties of men and women often differ in later life. This dissertation underscores the need to pay attention to older people with multiple disruptions, as they are often disadvantaged in health and parent-child relationships relative to older adults with one divorce or widowhood. The findings regarding the role of remarriage for each well-being outcome are mixed. Remarriage is beneficial for the mental health of men relative to being unmarried after any type of disruption, and for the physical health of divorced women. Although remarriage relates to more frequent parent-child contact for divorced men, remarriage relates to less contact among women after one widowhood or multiple disruptions. Remarriage also links to greater ambivalence among men after multiple disruptions. Duration also matters, but not uniformly across outcomes. Remarried men after multiple disruptions have worse mental health with more years remarried men after one divorce, indicating that duration remarried after multiple disruptions links to poorer mental health than duration remarried after one divorce. Although men with multiple disruptions have less contact with children than widowed men, additional years remarried yield more contact for men with multiple disruptions than for men with one widowhood. Moreover, women who remarry after widowhood have less contact with children than their unmarried counterparts, but each year remarried after widowhood is associated with more contact, suggesting these remarried women rebuild ties with children over time. In sum, my dissertation highlights the utility of employing different disruption pathways, subsequent remarriage, and duration remarried or unmarried to capture increasing complexity of marital biographies among older adults and to clarify its association with multiple dimensions of well-being.

Personality researchers have described dispositional traits to typically show stability over the life course and yet one such trait, shyness, has rarely been examined in later life. Shyness as a global trait has been linked negatively to multiple psychological indices of childhood well-being, including loneliness. Despite the fact that older adults may be already at risk for experiencing heightened loneliness, regret, or decreased fulfillment, research has not assessed these experiences in relation to personality in later life. In recent years, withdrawal research has begun to move past shyness as a global trait to examine the motivations behind socially withdrawn behavior. The current study used regression analyses to examine ways that three facets of withdrawal (shyness, avoidance, and unsociability) may relate to loneliness, regret, and fulfillment in later life. Data from 309 older participants of the Huntsman Senior Games were used to explore associations. Results indicated that shyness, avoidance, and unsociability significantly predicted increased loneliness and regret, and decreased fulfillment to some extent. Further, marital status (married, divorced, widowed) moderated links between withdrawal and psychological indices of later life well-being.

Although there have been significant improvements in the economic status of the elderly in the United States because of the Social Security retirement program and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, poverty among older women remains high. The economic vulnerability of women in older age has been directly linked to their greater likelihood of being unmarried, with marriage viewed as generally protecting the elderly from poverty. The economic status of older women also has been linked to their employment histories, in that women tend to have discontinuous work histories and often work at jobs that pay lower salaries than men. Moreover, their employment is often tied to marriage and childrearing. These factors mean many women will receive lower income in older age. Hence, a lifetime of weak attachment to the labor force leaves many women ill-prepared for economic security without a spouse. Other characteristics of women may further impact their income security in older age. Minority women, for example, are at an even greater disadvantage than white women; and women with high educational attainment may have strong work histories resulting in more favorable outcomes for income in later life. Within the context of a combination of viewpoints that include the life course, political economy, and feminist perspectives, this dissertation examines the relationship of gender, race, employment histories, number of children, and marital status on the economic security of women in later life. Economic security is measured by total household income and total wealth, or accumulated assets minus debt. A sample of women age 50 and over who are married, divorced, widowed, or have never been married are included in the study. Data are from the Rand Data File of the Health and Retirement Study. The Rand HRS Data File is a longitudinal data set based on the Health and Retirement Study (HRS) data. The HRS is a national panel study sponsored by the National Institute of Aging and conducted by the University of Michigan. From the data analysis, it was found that married women, overall, have greater income and wealth and, therefore, the largest number of sources of income compared to women in the other marital status groups. This was due largely to their access to their spouse's income and assets. The widowed women were shown to have the least amount of wage and salary income, but received the most from Social Security retirement. The widows in the study, however, had the least amount of total household income. Those women who had never been married had the strongest employment histories among the women in the four marital status groups, but they had less income and wealth than the married women in the sample. The race and ethnicity of the women were shown to have negative consequences for their economic security, with nonwhite women having fewer sources of income than their white counterparts. Education had a significant positive effect on the incomes and wealth of the women across all the marital status groups, while number of children had no effect on either the income or assets of women in this analysis.

Although accumulated research findings point to the effect of marital termination on elders' depression, seldom research has tested the moderator effects of marital quality and personal self-esteem on the relationship between marital dissolution and depression among elders. The current study uses three waves of the National Survey of Families and Households (NSFH), a nationally representative sample of 2570 people ages 50 and above, with 368 persons who were widowed at time 2 and 73 persons who got divorced at time 2. Using fixed-effects model, the study shows that leaving a poor marriage does less harm than leaving a satisfactory marriage on individuals' well-being. However, specific measures of things that are going on in the marriage (e.g. over- or under-benefiting) do not have an effect on the relationship between marital termination and depression. Moreover, this study demonstrated that self-esteem is related to decreased depression in later life. However, the effect of marital termination on depression does not differ by self-esteem. Further, the results showed that in terms of long-term consequences, marital status may not affect older adults' psychological well-being very much as long as they are healthy. This research will enhance knowledge about the phenomenon of widowhood and divorce in later life.
