Le présent volume est le tome II du Voyage aux Antilles et à l'Amérique méridionale, seul paru, où Jean-Baptiste Leblond raconte ses pérégrinations aventureuses d'une île à l'autre, sur une pirogue caraïbe, en compagnie de Caraïbes noirs, descendants libres d'esclaves naufragés. De la Martinique, il se rend à Sainte-Lucie, à Saint-Vincent, aux Grenadines, à la Grenade et à Trinidad. Il entreprend ensuite un long voyage qui le conduit jusqu'à Lima, parcourant le Venezuela, la Colombie, l'Equateur et le Pérou. De retour en France, il est chargé, en qualité de médecin-naturaliste du roi, de la recherche du quinquina en Guyane française, de 1786 à 1789. Installé ensuite comme colon à Cayenne, il prend part pendant la période révolutionnaire à la vie politique locale, comme député, puis président de l'Assemblée coloniale ; nommé botaniste de la colonie, il adresse en France de riches collections de végétaux, animaux et minéraux, dont partie subsiste de nos jours au Muséum d'Histoire naturelle. Après son retour en métropole en 1802, il publie Observations sur la fièvre jaune et les maladies des tropiques, Voyage aux Antilles et à l'Amérique méridionale, Description abrégée de la Guyane française. Il meurt à Luzy (Nièvre) en 1815. Dans le Voyage aux Antilles, il étudie la géographie des diverses îles et observe la formation des récifs coralliens, les phénomènes climatiques, la végétation tropicale et la faune marine. Formé à la médecine de façon empirique, il l'exerce d'abord auprès des esclaves. L'ouvrage donne des détails sur les maladies qui affectent différemment les divers groupes ethniques qu'il a l'occasion de soigner, sur les traitements utilisés, les facteurs qui déclenchent les épidémies, les précautions nécessaires pour s'en prémunir. Son tableau dépeint les modes de vie des colons français et anglais qui cohabitent dans les Iles, ceux de leurs esclaves et des gens de couleur libres, les difficultés économiques des propriétaires des plantations. Il décrit les coutumes des Caraïbes noirs, fixés à Saint-Vincent, auprès desquels il séjourne. Esprit vif et curieux, il exprime avec sincérité ses points de vue sur la géographie, la climatologie, l'histoire naturelle, l'agriculture tropicale, les questions médicales, les événements historiques et les relations sociales entre les divers groupes ethniques qui composent la société coloniale.
