"Maruyama Masao (1914-96) has been widely regarded as an archetype of the twentieth-century Japanese intellectual. Immensely influential for his scholarlywork in intellectual history and political science, Maruyama also reached a wider public through extensive writing and commentary in the leading opinion journals of the postwar period, where he emerge as an outspoken advocate of lieralism and democracy. In this intellectual biography, Karube Tadashi traces Maruyama's childhood and youth in prewa and wartime Japan, vividly depicting a number of the key experiences that deepened his comjmitment to democratic ideals and motivated his quest to ground them in the autonomy and integrity of the individual. This was the perspective that informed Maruyama's postwar investigation of the problems of mass society and his efforts to reinerpet the Japanese tradition by dissecting its pathologies and tracing the alternative paths to modernity latent within it."--BOOK JACKET.

In this dissertation, I propose to expand our understanding of the postwar liberal tradition beyond the Western experience by focusing attention on the prominent Japanese postwar thinker Maruyama Masao's (1914-96) postwar thought. His effort to re-imagine and re-conceptualize liberty from the rubbles of the Fifteen Years War (1931-1945) and wartime extremism was aimed at defending liberal values in a society that lacks liberal political culture. I argue that this effort is important and perhaps also necessary to grasp the global developments of twentieth-century liberalism, whose legacy significantly affects contemporary liberal movements and traditions. Although Maruyama has become an almost forgotten figure in contemporary English-speaking academia, his postwar thought and complicated vision for liberal democracy are continuously being examined by contemporary historians of East Asian political ideas and political theorists. His lasting influence is not just because of his invaluable contribution to the formation of the liberal tradition in postwar Japan but, more importantly, because many of his ideas are relevant to addressing the current problems we face today. However, the existing literature on Maruyama's postwar thought, in my view, involves two major problems: first, Maruyama's complicated view on liberty in the modern state has rarely been discussed in-depth; second, puzzling tensions in his thought tend to be discussed in an overly sympathetic or apologetic manner. Alternatively, through a critical reconstruction of Maruyama's postwar thought, I argue that a systematic investigation of deep tensions within his postwar thought is necessary to fully understand his complicated political vision involving fostering democratic citizenship, liberal nationalism, and an independent ethos. For this purpose, my approach directly addresses the internal tensions of Maruyama's postwar thought by exploring how Maruyama tried to reconcile diverse and tension-ridden ideas (e.g., liberalism, nationalism, and realism) in a way to address the problems of postwar Japan. Lastly, I aim to properly locate Maruyama in the broader tradition of mid-twentieth-century liberalism (or Cold War liberalism) by revisiting Maruyama's-thus far ignored-deep intellectual connection with his contemporary Western liberal thinkers.

"Lever of Empire is an engrossing page turner—I simply could not put it down until I had finished it. This is an important subject, and one that has not been given adequate attention in Western scholarship on Japan until now. Metzler has done thorough research, and has woven these materials together into an elegantly written whole. The result is an outstanding book."—Richard J. Liberalism and Chinese Economic Development brings international contributors together in order to consider economic, political, social and legislative aspects of China’s modernization. This volume explores how liberalism is received and perceived, and whether it is adapted or adopted upon the basis of centuries of Chinese civilization and decades of capitalism. China’s role in the global economy is an undeniable force. This book examines both historical and contemporary dimensions surrounding the question of Chinese liberalism, exploring China’s economic development in a comparative context. In particular, this text explores differences with the Western model, and more specifically, the relationship between Chinese economic thought and European traditions. This text assesses China’s economic development at both a macro and a micro level, and also considers its relationship with its neighbours. Campagnolo answers whether free-trade and capitalistic economic developments are long sustainable without other types of liberal developments? Or is the idea that political liberties and economic freedom are just Western ideologies? This is a uniquely wide ranging book, suitable for scholars of the Chinese economy, the history of economic thought, economic philosophy and international political economy.

Liberal Moments written by Ewa Atanassow and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-09-07 with Political Science categories.

This book is available as open access through the Bloomsbury Open Access programme and is available on www.bloomsburycollections.com. Liberalism today has perhaps more supporters and adversaries than any other political movement. This volume traces liberalism's global ascent through essays about some of the thinkers and actors who participated in its rise and spread. The essays included here present for the first time in one place the geographic and ideological diversity of liberal thought and practice as it developed since the eighteenth century. By exploring thinkers as diverse as Montesquieu, Abraham Lincoln, Jacob Burckhardt, Khayr al-Din, Hu Shih, John Rawls, and Czeslaw Milosz, this volume contributes toward a better understanding of liberalisms past and present. Each chapter opens with a critical passage from the author under consideration and explores the author's significance for liberalism. By facilitating a direct encounter with influential authors and texts, the volume serves as an introduction both to the multiple dimensions of liberalism and to reading texts in political thought. By engaging with particular liberal moments, the essays allow readers to create and explore conversations among liberalisms across time and space. It thus encourages a broader and more nuanced understanding of the nature and history of liberalism. Stimulating, accessible and interdisciplinary, Liberal Moments will appeal to students and scholars in the history of political thought, intellectual history and beyond.
