In this book, we present a compilation of short stories by the Italian writer Giovanni Verga, one of the greatest exponents of the literary movement of verismo, which emerged in Italy at the end of the 19th century and was characterized by the precise and objective description of social, political, and cultural reality. Verga's stories portray life and culture in southern Italy, particularly in Sicily, where he was born and raised. His works are deeply rooted in local culture and traditions, and explore themes such as poverty, injustice, love, and the struggle for life. This collection includes some of Verga's most famous and acclaimed short stories, such as Rosso Malpelo, The She-Wolf (La lupa), Nedda, Pentolaccia, Rustic Chivalry (Cavalleria rusticana), The Robbery (La roba), War of Saints (Guerra di Santi), Liberty (Libertà), The Story of Saint Joseph's Donkey (Storia dell'asino di S. Giuseppe), Malaria, Jeli the Shepherd (Jeli il pastore), and The Lover of Gramigna (L'amante di Gramigna) and Another Flood (Un'altra inondazione). Each of these stories offers a penetrating insight into the life and emotions of ordinary people, showing the richness and complexity of the human experience. With his precise and realistic prose, he offers a vivid and moving portrait of life in southern Italy at the end of the 19th century, and his work continues to be a lasting influence on Italian and world literature.

In this edition of "Marvels of Short Stories" we have gathered five stories by Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811), considered one of the greatest gothic writers of German literature. Each story is a masterpiece that offers an exciting and intense journey to the reader, with surprising twists and complex and intriguing characters. "The Earthquake in Chile" and "The Beggarwoman of Locarno" are two stories that present Kleist's darker and more disturbing side, exploring themes such as violence and injustice. "The Foundling" is an emotional story about cruelty, while "The Marquise of O." is a romantic story that explores the limits of morality and honor. Finally, "The Duel" is an intense story about a deadly duel that tests the courage and loyalty of its characters. Kleist is known for being a master at creating engaging plots and complex characters. This book is an excellent introduction to Kleist's work and an essential bibliography for lovers of dramatic short stories.

This second volume of Italian Short Stories, with its parallel translations aims - as the first volume did - to exemplify the richness and variety of Italian writing of the twentieth century. In this volume, however, some of the language used is a little more advanced and the translations slightly less literal. Moravia and Calvino, both well known to British and American readers, appear again along with Italo Svevo, Comisso, Vittorini, Rigoni - Stern, Fenoglio and Pasolini so that the literature of both Rome and the provinces is fully represented. There are also discussions of the less familiar words and dialect expressions in the Italian text.

Excerpt from Italian Short Stories The six stories here printed have been chosen as excellent in themselves, as representative of the leading modem Italian short story writers, and as affording varied pictures of life in different parts of Italy. The order in which they are arranged serves in general to indicate their relative difficulty, - besides giving place aux dames. The first two stories are simple in wording and in construction, and in order to make them available for effective use at the beginning of a course they have been given very full grammatical notes, and the irregular verb forms which occur in them (except the forms of avere and essere) have been separately entered in the vocabulary. The texts have been taken from current Italian editions, and no changes have been made in them except for the correction of obvious errors. The introductions dealing with Serao, Deledda, Fucini, and d'Annunzio are by Mr. Altrocchi. The other two introductions and the notes are by Mr. Wilkins. The introductions for Fogazzaro and Fucini mention all of their collected works. The other writers have produced so much that complete enumeration seemed inadvisable, and only their more important books are mentioned. Continuous and detailed bibliographies of their writings and of critical studies dealing with them appear in the several volumes of La Critica, a review founded in 1903 and directed by Benedetto Croce.
