International borders have become deadly barriers of a proportion rivaled only by war or natural disaster. Yet despite the damage created by borders, most people can’t – or don’t want to – imagine a world without them. What alternatives do we have to prevent the deadly results of contemporary borders? In today’s world, national citizenship determines a person’s ability to migrate across borders. Migration Borders Freedom questions that premise. Recognizing the magnitude of deaths occurring at contemporary borders worldwide, the book problematizes the concept of the border and develops arguments for open borders and a world without borders. It explores alternative possibilities, ranging from the practical to the utopian, that link migration with ideas of community, citizenship, and belonging. The author calls into question the conventional political imagination that assumes migration and citizenship to be responsibilities of nation states, rather than cities. While the book draws on the theoretical work of thinkers such as Ernst Bloch, David Harvey, and Henry Lefebvre, it also presents international empirical examples of policies and practices on migration and claims of belonging. In this way, the book equips the reader with the practical and conceptual tools for political action, activist practice, and scholarly engagement to achieve greater justice for people who are on the move. Over the past few years, Marx’s Capital has received renewed academic and popular attention. Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2005 im Fachbereich Politik - Politische Theorie und Ideengeschichte, Note: 1,0, Technische Universität Chemnitz, Veranstaltung: Asylpolitik und Migration, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: „Aber immer wuchsen die Märkte, immer stieg der Bedarf.“ Selbst wenn einige der Schlussfolgerungen von Karl Marx und Friedrich Engels hinsichtlich der von ihnen erwarteten Erhebung des Proletariats zur herrschenden Klasse als durchaus anfechtbar gelten, birgt die Gesellschaftsanalyse der Philosophen aus objektiv wissenschaftlichem Blickwinkel doch eine Vielzahl grundsätzlicher Wahr- und Gegebenheiten. Besonders vor dem Hintergrund einer zunehmend globalisierten Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft zu Beginn des 21. Jahrhunderts wandeln sich die getroffenen Prognosen zur unübersehbaren Realität. Und wenngleich das akademische Gewissen die negative Überspitzung ihrer Formulierung anprangern muss, so erscheint die Aussage, dass die aus dem Untergang der feudalen Gesellschaft hervorgegangene moderne bürgerliche Gesellschaft die Klassengegensätze nicht aufgehoben, sondern lediglich neue Klassen, neue Bedingungen der Unterdrückung und neue Gestaltungen des Kampfes an die Stelle der alten gesetzt hat , mit Blick auf die aktuellen internationalen Probleme als treffender den je. Diesbezüglich äußerte sich der Yale Professor Paul Kennedy speziell hinsichtlich globaler Migrationsbewegungen 1994 in der Zeitschrift Atlantic Monthly wie folgt: “Many members of the more prosperous economies are beginning to agree with Raspail’s vision of a world of two ‘camps’, separated and unequal, in which the rich will have to fight and the poor will have to die if mass migration is not to overwhelm us.” Vor diesem Hintergrund soll diese Arbeit zwei Aspekte näher beleuchten. Zum einen stellt sich die Frage, inwiefern derzeit bestehende Theorien hinreichende Erklärungsmodelle für globale Migrationsbewegungen sind. Mit Blick auf den begrenzten Umfang der Analyse wird dabei speziell auf die Arbeitsmigration eingegangen werden. Auf der Basis der theoretischen Ansätze gilt es darüber hinaus herauszufinden, ob die Theorien einer praktischen Untersuchung standhalten. Zu diesem Zweck wird das aktuell sehr kontrovers diskutierte und mit Sicherheit für die Zukunft der Europäischen Union brisante Beispiel der Ost-West-Migration herangezogen, wobei speziell auf Migrationsbewegungen zwischen der Ukraine und den Staaten der Europäischen Union untersucht werden.
