Andreas Dorpalen's German History in Marxist Perspective: The East German Approach is the most comprehensive study of historical scholarship in the former German Democratic Republic to have appeared in any language. His purpose is to analyze the way in which GDR historians, guided by the theoretical presuppositions of Marxist-Leninist ideology, have interpreted the German national past from the early Middle Ages to the present. The proletariat never existed—but it had a profound effect on modern German culture and society. As the most radicalized part of the industrial working class, the proletariat embodied the critique of capitalism and the promise of socialism. But as a collective imaginary, the proletariat also inspired the fantasies, desires, and attachments necessary for transforming the working class into a historical subject and an emotional community. This book reconstructs this complicated and contradictory process through the countless treatises, essays, memoirs, novels, poems, songs, plays, paintings, photographs, and films produced in the name of the proletariat. The Proletarian Dream reads these forgotten archives as part of an elusive collective imaginary that modeled what it meant—and even more important, how it felt—to claim the name "proletarian" with pride, hope, and conviction. By emphasizing the formative role of the aesthetic, the eighteen case studies offer a new perspective on working-class culture as a oppositional culture. This book explores the relationship between diverse social movements and Marxist historical cultures during the second half of the twentieth century in Western Europe, with special emphasis on the Federal Republic of Germany and Italy. During the Cold War, Marxist ideas and understandings of history informed not only the traditional Communist Parties in Western Europe, but also influenced a range of new social movements that emerged in the 1970s in the wake of the 1968 student rebellions. The generation of 1968 was strongly influenced by neo-Marxist ideas that they subsequently carried into the new social movements. The volume asks how Marxist historical cultures influenced third world movements, anti-fascist movements, the peace movement and a whole host of other new social movements that signaled a new vibrancy of civil society in Western Europe from the 1970s onwards.

Richard Müller, a leading figure of the German Revolution in 1918, is unknown today. As the operator and unionist who represented Berlin’s metalworkers, he was main organiser of the ‘Revolutionary Stewards’, a clandestine network that organised a series of mass strikes between 1916 and 1918. With strong support in the factories, the Revolutionary Stewards were the driving force of the Revolution. By telling Müller's story, this study gives a very different account of the revolutionary birth of the Weimar Republic. Using new archival sources and abandoning the traditional focus on the history of political parties, Ralf Hoffrogge zooms in on working class politics on the shop floor and its contribution to social change. Die theologischen Grundkonzepte Martin Luthers und Thomas Müntzers wurden von kirchlichen und gesellschaftlichen Strömungen oft für eigene Interessen instrumentalisiert, so dass die historischen Personen nur noch eine untergeordnete Rolle spielen. Ihre Wirkung verblasst im Verhältnis zur Intention des Rezipienten, für seine Gegenwart Impulse zu setzen. Damit wird der Rezipient zum handelnden Subjekt. Dieser Perspektivwechsel führt dazu, zunehmend von Rezeptionsgeschichte und weniger von Wirkungsgeschichte zu schreiben. Daraus entwickelt sich auch eine differenzierte Bewertung, die sowohl nach einer angemessenen Beurteilung historischer Gegebenheiten als auch nach einer sinnvollen Würdigung von gegenwärtigen Diskussionszusammenhängen des Rezipienten fragt. [Historical Scholarship as a Platform for Present-Day Debate: Works on the Reception History of Luther and Müntzer] Church and state movements used Luther and Müntzer's theological concepts to serve their own interests. For them, the historical figures Luther and Müntzer played a subordinate role. Consequently the influence of the historical figures was fading in relation to the recipient's intention to find suitable answers for his own time. Thereby the recipient became an active part of the reception process which led to the increasing preference of the term reception history over the term "Wirkungsgeschichte" (history of effects). This analytical shift allows for a balanced evaluation, incorporating historical reality as well as an analysis of the recipient's contemporary context.

Die Geschichtswissenschaft wurde damit zum wichtigsten ideologischen Stützpfeiler der SED-Herrschaft. In der vorliegenden Studie wird erstmals anhand der bis 1990 nicht zugänglichen Archivalien umfassend untersucht, wie sich der Umbau einer gesamten Wissenschaftsdisziplin nach ideologischen Zwecksetzungen vollzog und die Geschichtswissenschaft der DDR zunehmend politisch instrumentalisiert wurde. Behandelt werden dabei der Verdrängungsprozeß bürgerlicher Wissenschaftler, das Verhalten der 'neuen' Historiker in den Krisen von 1953, 1956 und 1961, das Beziehungsgeflecht zwischen Staat, Partei, Wissenschaft sowie die Kontakte der ostdeutschen Historiker zu ihren westdeutschen Kollegen.
