Innovative Impressions explores an under-examined aspect of three impressionists' careers: their groundbreaking prints and the new techniques they developed through collaboration and experimentation. In 1879, Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, and Camille Pissarro formed the most active core of a group of artists planning a periodical to feature their prints. Through this collaborative effort they challenged each other to develop a new language of printmaking whose visual and expressive potential went well beyond the traditional reproductive purpose of the medium. Indeed, the intimacy of small-scale works on paper at times spurred the artists to be even more daringly creative than they were in their paintings. Their interactions and engagement with printmaking varied over time, culminating in the 1890s, when each developed distinctive methods of introducing color into their work. For much of their careers this unlikely trio of artists inspired and challenged each other, and these dynamics played a crucial role in their creative processes.

The academic scholarship that surrounds Mary Cassatt situates her work within a staunchly gendered category of "female artist." By placing this title on the artist and her work, in the context of 19th century art criticism, her paintings have been overlooked as simple sentimental representations of women and children. Yet, a thorough analysis of Cassatt's character, class-status, and cultural exposure to wit, present a very different picture; her "sentimental" work takes a new meaning when looked at through a cultural context of artistic practices in wit and conversation. Cassatt's presentation of wit is grounded in social critique, asserting her position as an upper-class woman. She takes the act of perception, intrinsic to the irony found in wit and turns it towards the traditional conceptions of femininity and womanhood. By identifying the witty play within Cassatt's work as well as her contemporaries, a more intellectually engaged artist appears.

This volume presents a selection of the prints by American artist Mary Cassatt (1844-1926) from the collection of The National Gallery, Canada. As well as being a skillful painter, Cassatt was a gifted printmaker. Cassatt was a friend and collaborator of fellow Impressionist Edgar Degas, and, like him, she often depicted the day-to-day lives of women -- with seamstresses, confiding in companions, and caring for children. In the early 1890s, Cassatt was also inspired by Japanese woodblock prints and as a result, she infused many of her works with striking Asian forms and patterns that were refreshing and technically innovative.
