Varian Fry, a young editor from New York, traveled to Marseilles after Germany defeated France in the summer of 1940. The French Cursive style of calligraphy was used in France from the 17th century to the middle of the 20th century. Until then, every school child learned to write using letters based on "La Ronde" (as it is called in French).
