Excerpt from Poems and Plays by Charles and Mary Lamb In order, however, that the scheme of Lamb's 1818 edition of his Works might be preserved, I have indicated in the text the position in the Works occupied by all the poems that in the present volume have been printed earlier. The chronological order, in so far as it has been followed, emphasises the dividing line between Lamb's poetry and his verse. As he grew Older his poetry, for the most part, passed into his prose. His best and truest poems, with few exceptions, belong to the years before, say, 1805, when he was thirty. After this, follow ing a long interval Of silence, came the brief satirical outburst of 1812, in The Examiner, and the longer one, in 1820, in The Champion; then, after another interval, during which he was busy as Elia, came the period of album verses, which lasted to the end. The impulse to write personal prose, which was quickened in Lamb by the London Magazine in 1820, seems to have taken the place of his Old ambition to be a poet. In his later and more mechanical period there were, however, occasional in spirations as when he wrote the sonnet on Work, in 1819; on Leisure, in 1821 the lines in his own Album, in 1827, and, pre-eminently, the poem On an Infant Dying as Soon as Born, in 1827. Lamb seems never quite to have satisfied himself that it was not in him to write successfully for the stage. Excerpt from The Works of Charles and Mary Lamb, Vol. 2: Elia and the Last Essays of Elia This volume contains the work by which Charles Lamb is best known and upon which his fame will rest - Elia and The Last Essays of Elia. Although one essay is s early as 1811, and one is perhaps as late as 1882, the book represents the period between 1820 and 1826, when Lamb was between forty-five and fifty-one. This was the richest period of his literary life. The text of the present volume is that of the first edition of each book - Elia, 1828, and The Lott Essays of Elia, 1888. The principal differences between the essays as they were printed in the London Magazine and elsewhere, and as they were revised for book form by their author, are shown in the Notes. The three-part essay on "The Old Actors" (London Magazine, February, April, and October, 1822), from which Lamb prepared the three essays On Some of the Old Actors," "The Artificial Comedy of the Last Century," and "The Acting of Munden," is printed in the Appendix as it first appeared. The absence of the "Confessions of a Drunkard " from this volume is due to the fact that lamb did not include it in the first edition of The Last Essays of Elia. It was inserted later, in place of "A Death-Bed," on account of objections that were raised to that essay by the family of Randal Norris. The story is told in the notes to "A Death-Bed," on page 462. Excerpt from Bibliography of the Writings of Charles and Mary Lamb: A Literary History The compilation of the pages that follow has been made possible by the devoted labours of Lamb's many editors, - Shepherd, Ainger, Lucas, Macdonald, to name only those to whom I am chiefly indebted. Their labours have been so enthusiastic and so thorough that it would seem little has been left to the gleaner in the field they have traversed, yet the curious reader will find here and there among my annotations some few new sidelights on Lamb, insignificant in themselves and gathered in unlikely corners, yet justifying their places in the literary history of Lamb. My endeavour has been to make of the bald and uninteresting facts of bibliography a connected and succinct narrative of Lamb's literary activities, in his own words where possible. If Bibliography is ever to take a place in Literature it must become something more than a time-table record of facts. Biography is the history of the writer; let Bibliography become the history of the written, and it will cease to occupy its undistinguished place among the "Books which are not Books."
