Excerpt from Maryland Colonization Journal, Vol. 1: March 15, 1843 Among the candidates for his successor was king Tom himself. This greatly alarmed the two bush kings, as they were sensible that, in case king Tom succeeded, he would trouble himself little about a division of the spoils, and there would be an end to this prolific source of revenue. They accordingly opposed king Tom, and succeeded in procuring the election of a head-man of one of their bush towns. This greatly chagrined the king, and was one of the causes which induced him to treat with me, and cede his territory to the Maryland State Colonization Society, hoping thereby to throw the power he felt himself losing, into other hands than those of his enemies, and to secure himself a good reputation with his new allies. I also subsequently learned that he had received some intelligence of my negociations with the bush kings on the river, and he readily foresaw that should an arrange ment be effected with them for opening a road between Cape Palmas and the river, it would materially lessen his consequence, and the value of his territory, or render it less an object of desire to the American agent. All these circumstances led me to suppose that a treaty would be easily effected with king Tom himself; but at the same time I became more doubtful of the dispositions of his sub-kings, who, I perceived, were rather gaining on the old man in consequence and in uence. Excerpt from Maryland Colonization Journal, Vol. 1: December 15, 1841 When I was about leaving the colony I visited all the emigrants, and asked them if they wished to return to the United States with me - they all with the exception Of three, promptly answered, no sir. They had re covered much of their former spirits, as is fully indicated by their unwilling ness to accompany me home. So far as I was able to ascertain the state of agriculture in the colony, it did not strike me that it had been pushed with sufficient zeal. Not more than six or seven families were, at the time I left the Cape, preparing their lands for cultivation - one man only had cleared and fenced in his lands, and judging from the productiveness of all the gardens on the Cape, I should suppose that he is doing very well. The growth of all garden and field vegetables, so far as they have been tried, is very rapid and luxuriant. All the gardens on the Cape were in a thriving condition. I should say that a square, of the size of the common gardens in this country, would yield a sufficiency of vegetables to support a family of from six to eight persons in number. Excerpt from Maryland Colonization Journal, Vol. 1: November 15, 1842 Not only does this state of things exist in the British W'est Indies, but in British colonies on the coast of Africa, where it has become a rule for the whites (males only reside there, ) to select some of the African females as their mistresses during their temporary sojourn. When custom sanctions such gross deviations from the path of rectitude, and when the prostitution of female virtue becomes a matter of unprincipled exultation, would it be reasonable for us to expect happiness to ourselves or families? Excerpt from Maryland Colonization Journal, Vol. 1: June 15, 1842 In the colonies the natives behold all the machinery of government in motion, all the various mechanic arts to a certain extent in Operation, and all the customs and habits of civilized life more or less perfectly practised by the colonist, but a small degree removed from themselves. Also: 'that the revivals of religion, which are now spreading over the country, under the auspices of the clergy, are tainted and spurious, and utterly subversive Of the princi ples of human liberty, and ought therefore to be universally repudiated by the friends of humanity.' P. There are opposite accounts stated particularly of almost every material fact. It appears, however, that three nights since a 'quarrel occurred between some whites and blacks, in which the whites were worsted. Night before last an affray occurred between whites and blacks again, in, which the blacks stabbed severely two young men. One we are informed, is likely to die.
