The Changing Definition of Masculinity is an outgrowth of four years of developing and teaching the course "Social Factors in Male Personality" at Ohio State University, Columbus. This volume reflects, in addition to my thoughts and feelings about what should be discussed in a sex-roles course taught from a male per spective, the thoughts, feelings, and knowledge of scores of students, col leagues, and friends. These are persons who either have taken the course or discussed with me appropriate material to be included in such a course and/or book. Chapter 1, for example, is influenced greatly by the work of Eliza beth and Joseph Pleck's The American Man, dealing with the periods of masculinity in the United States up to 1965. The chapter also deals with emerging meanings of masculinity after 1965, and female and male responses to these meanings. The second chapter is devoted to male sex-role socialization and examines the roles of biology and environment in male socialization. It is also concerned with agents of male socialization and with male assumption of such sex-role traits as dominance, competitiveness, the work ethic, and violence. In Chapter 2, I also propose two general mas culine roles frequently assumed by American males which mayor may not be race-specific-the White masculine role and the Black masculine role.

This book shows how East Asian masculinities are being formed and transformed as Asia is increasingly globalized. The gender roles performed by Chinese and Japanese men are examined not just as they are lived in Asia, but also in the West. The essays collected here enhance current understandings of East Asian identities and cultures as well as Western conceptions of gender and sexuality. While basic issues such as masculine ideals in China and Japan are examined, the book also addresses issues including homosexuality, women's perceptions of men, the role of sport and food and Asian men in the Chinese diaspora.

Our society promotes certain gender-based stereotypes. These stereotypes often force individuals into boxes, limiting their ability to express their emotions. Men, in particular, are taught from a young age that to be masculine you must be strong and dominant. The following piece will analyze the concepts which limit male's emotional expressivity. Specifically, the fact that interpersonal relationships and connections become blurred within the social ideas of masculinity. This attributes to the loss of meaning for many men.

Toxic Masculinity brings together scholars across disciplines to explore the ways in which toxic masculinity is constructed, configured and represented online. What is "toxic masculinity"? Examining what it means in the media and public discourse, the contributors have explored a constellation of behaviours, cultures and practices that have been labelled as (or associated with) toxic masculinity including those of politicians, extremists, incels, as well as individual "ordinary" men and their everyday behaviours. Topics covered in the collection include incels and Men Going Their Own Way (MGTOW), bro culture, sexual violence, internalised homophobia, transphobia, white masculinity and political discourse. Toxic Masculinity is intended for a broad spectrum of gender, media, cultural and masculinity studies professionals, academics, researchers and students. The book also includes suggestions for further reading, a discussion of methods used in each chapter and contextual prefaces to make connections between critical questions and cases.

From AskMen senior editor and non-binary writer Alex Manley comes The New Masculinity: 13 Old-School Man Rules to Start Breaking, a guide for escaping the shackles of toxic masculinity, unlearning what it means to be a man, and pushing back against the various ways masculinity teaches people to hurt rather than help, and to harm rather than heal. Manley charts a course for a wholly new future of the self that's neither particularly manly nor particularly masculine, but responsive, invested, and caring. Having written and edited for a men's website for seven and a half years, Manley has seen up close how angry, scared, and lonely men are, and how entrenched in a culture war they feel. This book is a guide for unlearning the habits that perpetuate that harm. There are an infinite number of ways to be a person, but to access them fully, men first need to unlearn the restrictions of modern gender roles and the ways society has taught them to shave parts of themselves off until their masculinity comes before their humanity.
