For over a century, visual maskingwhere one stimulus reduces the visibility of another stimulushas been used as a powerful tool to explore the visual system. Two major forms have emerged: backward masking and common onset masking. These two forms, which are characterized by the temporal properties of the stimuli, are often used to probe different underlying masking mechanisms, and the two forms typically employ a unique set of spatial characteristics of the mask. This clustering of stimulus properties makes it challenging to assess the effect of each stimulus property by itself. This dissertation describes an attempt to isolate the effects of these properties. In the first set of experiments various masking schedules are tested, including backward, common onset, and variations between, while keeping the spatial properties of the stimuli constant. In the second set of experiments four-dot common onset masking is explored in detail, and in one of the experiments, a single masking schedule is tested while varying the spatial properties of the mask. Across all experiments, target stimuli are presented foveally. A computational model is developed to account for data across both sets of experiments. Three important findings emerge. First, masking can be successfully obtained in central visual field using a variety of stimulus properties. Second, there is compelling evidence that persisting traces of these stimuli play an important role in masking. Third, there is strong evidence of both spatially local and global masking effects.

Substantial evidence supports the hypothesis that visual detection in the presence of masking noise occurs at a constant signal/noise ratio only if the subject is unfamiliar with the mask. A variety of studies of the proposed sustained/transient mechanism model have failed to find support for a dichotomous visual system, and have failed to replicate some of the classical studies in this area. Studies of hypothetical velocity-tuned channels suggest the possible existence of such channels, but show that they are, at best, mixed in their tuning properties. Weisstein'g Pixel Flicker technique has been found to be an artifact of an unrealistic algorithm for adding noise to a visual scene. Other temporal enhancement schemes show some promise.

Our visual system can process information at both conscious and unconscious levels. Understanding the factors that control whether a stimulus reaches our awareness, and the fate of those stimuli that remain at an unconscious level, are the major challenges of brain science in the new millennium. Since its publication in 1984, Visual Masking has established itself as a classic text in the field of cognitive psychology. In the years since, there have been considerable advances in the cognitive neurosciences, and a growth of interest in the topic of consciousness, and the time is ripe for a new edition of this text. Where most current approaches to the study of visual consciousness adopt a 'steady-state' view, the approach presented in this book explores its dynamic properties. This new edition uses the technique of visual masking to explore temporal aspects of conscious and unconscious processes down to a resolution in the millisecond range. The 'time slices' through conscious and unconscious vision revealed by the visual masking technique can shed light on both normal and abnormal operations in the brain. The main focus of this book is on the microgenesis of visual form and pattern perception - microgenesis referring to the processes occurring in the visual system from the time of stimulus presentation on the retinae to the time, a few hundred milliseconds later, of its registration at conscious or unconscious perceptual and behavioural levels. Computer Vision Systems is a collection of papers presented at the Workshop on Computer Vision Systems held at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Massachusetts, on June 1-3, 1977. When children and adults apply for disability benefits and claim that a visual impairment has limited their ability to function, the U.S. Social Security Administration (SSA) is required to determine their eligibility. To ensure that these determinations are made fairly and consistently, SSA has developed criteria for eligibility and a process for assessing each claimant against the criteria. Visual Impairments: Determining Eligibility for Social Security Benefits examines SSA's methods of determining disability for people with visual impairments, recommends changes that could be made now to improve the process and the outcomes, and identifies research needed to develop improved methods for the future. The report assesses tests of visual function, including visual acuity and visual fields whether visual impairments could be measured directly through visual task performance or other means of assessing disability. These other means include job analysis databases, which include information on the importance of vision to job tasks or skills, and measures of health-related quality of life, which take a person-centered approach to assessing visual function testing of infants and children, which differs in important ways from standard adult tests.
