Another thing to be noted in this baptismal record is that the painter's name, frequently written Gilbert Charles Stuart, is entered simply as Gilbert Stuart, and if, as tradition has it, the Charles was later inserted because of his father's loyalty to bonnie Prince Charlie, Stuart himself did not long retain it.
