Quando da decisão de um profissional de assuntos técnicos de redigir um artigo técnico ou mesmo um livro, o autor se depara de imediato com a clara definição dos objetivos que pretende alcançar e de seu público-alvo. Estes objetivos, não raramente, têm estreita ligação com a atividade profissional do autor e com as deficiências que encontrou nessa trajetória, geralmente abrangendo muitos anos de suas atividades, incluindo os de formação. Os três volumes de Materiais elétricos foram sensivelmente influenciados por um ano de aperfeiçoamento no exterior e pela concomitante atividade do autor no ensino e na área industrial de empresas do ramo eletromecânico e de projetos, assim como por uma longa atuação no ramo editorial, produzindo textos para revistas técnicas e livros. Desse modo, os objetivos que se destacaram foram os de enfocar, a serviço do leitor do aluno de escolas técnicas e de engenharia, os "porquês" de um dado componente ser construído com determinadas matérias-primas e acompanhar seu comportamento diante da variação de condições de uso, como temperatura, umidade etc. A partir disso, surgem respostas a outra questão: qual a durabilidade ou vida útil que tal componente apresenta e quais as razões desta durabilidade? Tudo isto está, sempre que possível, alicerçado nas normas técnicas da ABNT/COBEI e atendendo ao INMETRO no que se refere às Grandezas e Unidades de Medida do Sistema Internacional (SI).
