My undergraduate thesis focuses on the use of authentic materials for reading comprehension in Italian class, which should be also applicable to beginners. Authentic texts are texts that are intended for native speakers and not those which have been adapted for foreign language teaching. In this thesis, we focus only on literary texts. Students benefit a lot from reading such texts as they are rich in cultural content and reflect real life. They, therefore, make language learning more true to life. In addition, students are more motivated to learn the language knowing that they are in touch with reality by being exposed to authentic texts. Although the use of authentic texts is very useful for students, we must be aware of their drawbacks. Since they are intended for native speakers, certain texts may be too difficult for students, especially for beginners. Therefore, we have to pay attention to the level of the text and its length.

The concept of university language centres has changed in recent decades.
