En la cárcel de mujeres se fabrica un "universo femenino" que materializa el performance de género tanto en la organización del espacio como en la del tiempo. Tal universo parece construirse como evidencia empírica de la existencia real de ciertas ideas acerca de la feminidad, que se crea y es puesta en acto en todos los elementos que la componen. Como toda construcción identitaria, esta trata de uniformar a todas las personas en su ámbito. El discurso sobre la criminalidad de las mujeres y su concreción en los espacios penitenciarios participan en la formulación social de la maternidad como construcción de género, la cual a su vez está atravesada y mediatizada por la experiencia de las presas. Este trabajo estudia la cárcel como un lugar antropológico que permite enmarcar, en una situación específica, los procesos mediante los cuales se construyen discursivamente el género y la maternidad; y busca iluminar algunos aspectos que suelen quedar en la oscuridad resultante de la "naturalización" ideológica. Nos permite asimismo internarnos en la experiencia subjetiva de las mujeres encarceladas y ver ángulos nuevos en el análisis de los procesos mediante los cuales dichos discursos se encarnan en ellas. La manera en que se entiende y se vive la maternidad en prisión nos informa también de qué manera las instituciones sociales concretan y reproducen los supuestos del contexto en que tienen su origen. Con ello resulta posible saber cómo el sistema carcelario participa también en la producción del género.

El difícil acceso a los centros penitenciarios, incluso si se consigue acceder a su interior, hace complejo el conocimiento y la comprensión de las realidades y de las vivencias de la población reclusa y de los procesos de acción-intervención que se desarrollan en ellos. Ya dentro, se comprueba que la situación de las mujeres aún más dificultosa, puesto que no sólo son una población minoritaria, sino que los impactos en sus vidas y en sus familias son muy costosos y se hallan invisibilizadas en un marco de mayor riesgo, vulnerabilidad y/o conflicto, así como en una estructura masculinizada que, con frecuencia, olvida sus especificidades de género y enfatiza más el estigma social y moral. Las mujeres en el medio penitenciario constituyen una temática poco tratada y escasamente abordada desde la educación; sin embargo, es una realidad que ha comenzado a emerger como campo propio de estudio y acción de la Pedagogía y de la Educación Social, y reclama la urgencia de respuestas acordes a ellas y sus circunstancias, con el fin último de buscar el cambio, la integración, la promoción y la mejora de su calidad de vida. Así pues, esta obra supone un reto porque es el primer trabajo de propuesta educativa que tiene el objetivo de profundizar en la situación de las mujeres en el medio penitenciario, personas y grupos de especial sensibilidad, crudeza, riesgo, vulnerabilidad, conflicto... Se enfatiza en el análisis, la reflexión y la discusión de las intervenciones en la población reclusa y en los fundamentos teóricos que guían la actuación, teniendo en cuenta que el entorno penitenciario es un espacio punitivo que ofrece un marco de mayor complejidad social, donde, a la vez, coexisten alternativas orientadas hacia la integración. Todo ello bajo el prisma educativo y social propio de la Pedagogía y de la Educación Social; es decir, tanto desde la disciplina como de la dimensión práctica y profesional. Para tal fin se cuenta con exponentes de la máxima relevancia en el tema que, desde distintos enfoques, ofrecen avances, propuestas, críticas, experiencias, etc. de absoluta actualidad y que invitan a reflexionar, revisar nuestra posición y actuar en consecuencia.

A large proportion—and in many jurisdictions the majority—of incarcerated women are mothers. Popular attention is often paid to challenges faced by children of incarcerated mothers while incarcerated women themselves often do not “count” as mothers in mainstream discourse. This is the first anthology on incarcerated mothers’ experiences that is primarily based on and reflects the Canadian context. It is also trans- national in scope as it covers related issues from other countries around the world. These essays examine connections between mothering and incarceration, from analysis of the justice system and policies, criminalization of motherhood, to understanding experiences of mothers in prisons as presented in their own voices.
