This book is intended to help candidates prepare for entrance examinations in mathematics and scientific subjects, including STEP (Sixth Term Examination Paper). STEP is an examination used by Cambridge colleges as the basis for conditional offers. They are also used by Warwick University, and many other mathematics departments recommend that their applicants practice on the past papers even if they do not take the examination. Advanced Problems in Mathematics is recommended as preparation for any undergraduate mathematics course, even for students who do not plan to take the Sixth Term Examination Paper. The questions analysed in this book are all based on recent STEP questions selected to address the syllabus for Papers I and II, which is the A-level core (i.e. C1 to C4) with a few additions. Each question is followed by a comment and a full solution. The comments direct the reader's attention to key points and put the question in its true mathematical context. The solutions point students to the methodology required to address advanced mathematical problems critically and independently. This book is a must read for any student wishing to apply to scientific subjects at university level and for anybody interested in advanced mathematics.

This book describes current problems in data science and Big Data. Key topics are data classification, Graph Cut, the Laplacian Matrix, Google Page Rank, efficient algorithms, hardness of problems, different types of big data, geometric data structures, topological data processing, and various learning methods. For unsolved problems such as incomplete data relation and reconstruction, the book includes possible solutions and both statistical and computational methods for data analysis. Initial chapters focus on exploring the properties of incomplete data sets and partial-connectedness among data points or data sets. Discussions also cover the completion problem of Netflix matrix; machine learning method on massive data sets; image segmentation and video search. This book introduces software tools for data science and Big Data such MapReduce, Hadoop, and Spark. This book contains three parts. The first part explores the fundamental tools of data science. It includes basic graph theoretical methods, statistical and AI methods for massive data sets. In second part, chapters focus on the procedural treatment of data science problems including machine learning methods, mathematical image and video processing, topological data analysis, and statistical methods. The final section provides case studies on special topics in variational learning, manifold learning, business and financial data rec overy, geometric search, and computing models. Mathematical Problems in Data Science is a valuable resource for researchers and professionals working in data science, information systems and networks. Advanced-level students studying computer science, electrical engineering and mathematics will also find the content helpful.

Tales Of Impossibility written by David S. Richeson and has been published by Princeton University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-11-02 with Mathematics categories.
A comprehensive look at four of the most famous problems in mathematics Tales of Impossibility recounts the intriguing story of the renowned problems of antiquity, four of the most famous and studied questions in the history of mathematics. First posed by the ancient Greeks, these compass and straightedge problems—squaring the circle, trisecting an angle, doubling the cube, and inscribing regular polygons in a circle—have served as ever-present muses for mathematicians for more than two millennia. David Richeson follows the trail of these problems to show that ultimately their proofs—which demonstrated the impossibility of solving them using only a compass and straightedge—depended on and resulted in the growth of mathematics. Richeson investigates how celebrated luminaries, including Euclid, Archimedes, Viète, Descartes, Newton, and Gauss, labored to understand these problems and how many major mathematical discoveries were related to their explorations. Although the problems were based in geometry, their resolutions were not, and had to wait until the nineteenth century, when mathematicians had developed the theory of real and complex numbers, analytic geometry, algebra, and calculus. Pierre Wantzel, a little-known mathematician, and Ferdinand von Lindemann, through his work on pi, finally determined the problems were impossible to solve. Along the way, Richeson provides entertaining anecdotes connected to the problems, such as how the Indiana state legislature passed a bill setting an incorrect value for pi and how Leonardo da Vinci made elegant contributions in his own study of these problems. Taking readers from the classical period to the present, Tales of Impossibility chronicles how four unsolvable problems have captivated mathematical thinking for centuries.

Mathematical Problems for Chemistry Students has been compiled and written (a) to help chemistry students in their mathematical studies by providing them with mathematical problems really occurring in chemistry (b) to help practising chemists to activate their applied mathematical skills and (c) to introduce students and specialists of the chemistry-related fields (physicists, mathematicians, biologists, etc.) into the world of the chemical applications. Some problems of the collection are mathematical reformulations of those in the standard textbooks of chemistry, others were taken from theoretical chemistry journals. All major fields of chemistry are covered, and each problem is given a solution. This problem collection is intended for beginners and users at an intermediate level. It can be used as a companion to virtually all textbooks dealing with scientific and engineering mathematics or specifically mathematics for chemists. * Covers a wide range of applications of the most essential tools in applied mathematics * A new approach to a number of classical textbook-problems * A number of non-classical problems are included

This book collects recent research on posing and solving mathematical problems. Rather than treating these two crucial aspects of school mathematics as separate areas of study, the authors approach them as a unit where both areas are measured on equal grounds in relation to each other. The contributors are from a vast variety of countries and with a wide range of experience; it includes the work from many of the leading researchers in the area and an important number of young researchers. The book is divided in three parts, one directed to new research perspectives and the other two directed to teachers and students, respectively.
