Excerpt from Mathematische Unterhaltungen und Spiele Das Gebiet der von Bachet sogenannten "problemes plaisants et delectables qui se font par les nombres" hat seit Decennien sicherlich keinen hingebungsvolleren und erfolgreicheren Vertreter als Edouard Lucas gefunden; hiervon legen beredtes Zeugnis ab nicht nur zahlreiche in diversen Zeitschriften zerstreute Artikel, nicht nur viele Partieen seiner "Theorie des nombres," sondern auch seine "Arithmetique amusante" (Paris 1895), insbesondere aber seine "Recreations mathematiques" (t. I - IV). Immerhin ist dieses letztere Werk, das als eine Gesamtdarstellung des betreffenden Gebietes geplant war, in folge des plotzlichen Hinscheidens seines Verfassers bekanntlich unvollendet geblieben; schon die beiden letzten der 4 Bande sind posthum, und wichtige, fur die weiteren Bande in Aus sicht genommene Materien haben keine oder wenigstens keine erschopfende Behandlung in dem Werke erfahren konnen. So ist, um nur eins anzufuhren, das wichtige Rosselsprungproblem, dem allein die Halfte eines Bandes gewidmet werden sollte, bedauerlicherweise nur ganz stiefmutterlich behandelt und hat zuruckstehen mussen hinter anderen, in dem uberhaupt etwas breit angelegten Werke vertretenen Dingen, die weder den Mathematiker aus principiellen, noch den Laien aus allgemeinen Grunden auch nur annahernd in gleichem Masse interessieren durften. - Die deutsche Litteratur besitzt ein ahnliches Werk, wie das Lucas'sche, nicht.
