The application of technology to information, communication, and culture has been through the history of humanity a key factor in social progress and well being. Literatures in the Digital Era: Theory and Praxis analyses in its twenty chapters the impacts of digital technology for the contemporary culture. The literary system is being powerfully affected in three aspects. In the first place, computer resources have been used to preserve and edit literary texts, associating to them graphical material, links with related texts or with dictionaries, and, above all, developing search tools of concordance and syntactic/semantic analysis. Secondly, we are watching the birth of a digital literature, with new generic characteristics, new creators, with knowledge of both, technological mechanisms and literary resources, and a reader capable of interpreting and enjoying texts on the screen. Thirdly, literary theory has expressed new postulates with regard to the multiple authorship of digital texts, the disintegration of the textual meaning, the intertextuality and implications of the reader in the creation process and the interpretation of the texts. These three impacts imply, for some authors, the search of a new paradigm for the creation, reading, and interpretation of digital texts, which points to a new humanism.

The last decades have seen a revival of fragmentation in British and American works of fiction that deny linearity, coherence and continuity in favour of disruption, gaps and fissures. Authors such as Ali Smith, David Mitchell and David Shields have sought new ways of representing our global, media-saturated contemporary experience which differ from modernist and postmodernist experimentations from which the writers nevertheless draw inspiration. This volume aims to investigate some of the most important contributions to fragmentary literature from British and American writers since the 1990s, with a particular emphasis on texts released in the twenty-first century. The chapters within examine whether contemporary forms of literary fragmentation constitute a return to the modernist episteme or the fragmented literature of exhaustion of the 1960s, mark a continuity with postmodernist aesthetics or signal a deviation from past models and an attempt to reflect today’s accelerated culture of social media and over-communication. Contributors theorise and classify literary fragments, examine the relationship between fragmentation and the Zeitgeist (influenced by globalisation, media saturation and social networks), analyse the mechanics of multimodal and multimedial fictions, and consider the capacity of literary fragmentation to represent personal or collective trauma and to address ethical concerns. They also investigate the ways in which the architecture of the printed book is destabilised and how aesthetic processes involving fragmentation, bricolage and/or collage raise ontological, ethical and epistemological questions about the globalised contemporary world we live in and its relation to the self and the other. Besides the aforementioned authors, the volume makes reference to the works of J. G. Ballard, Julian Barnes, Mark Z. Danielewski, David Markson, Jonathan Safran Foer, David Foster Wallace, Jeanette Winterson and several others.

En prenant comme prétexte la crainte très contemporaine que le livre disparaisse en raison des transformations techniques, l’auteur montre plutôt comment notre époque permet, de façon surprenante, de renouveler des esthétiques et des pratiques que rendent possibles ces mêmes transformations. Ce renouveau prend de front l’opposition entre le livre et l’écran et, de façon plus large, les tensions entre la culture du livre et la culture numérique ou celle de l’écran. D’un côté, on teste les limites du livre en le malmenant de toutes parts : il devient un matériau pour collages, découpages, coloriages et écritures, une forme investie sur le plan symbolique. De l’autre, on explore les possibilités de l’écran à soutenir des projets à caractère littéraire, mais hors du livre : des fictions délocalisées, des oeuvres hypermédia, des profils de fiction créés et animés sur les réseaux sociaux, de même que des textes générés artificiellement. L’auteur brosse ainsi le portrait d’une littérature préoccupée par ses fondements mêmes et soucieuse d’imaginer de nouvelles avenues éditoriales à travers un éventail de projets littéraires et artistiques rarement réunis dans un seul essai.
