Von dem Dichter Matthias Claudius (1740-1815) sind zwei Briefautographe erhalten. Korrespondenzpartner des ersten Briefs ist Johann Martin Miller (1750-1814), Schöpfer des bekannten Liedes "Was frag ich viel nach Geld und Gut, wenn ich zufrieden bin!" Miller war im September 1772 Mitbegründer des Göttinger Hainbunds, einer Natur verehrenden, zum Sturm und Drang neigenden literarischen Gruppe, der u.a. Johann Heinrich Voß, Ludwig Christoph Heinrich Hölty, Gottlieb Dieterich von Miller, Johann Friedrich Hahn und Johann Thomas Ludwig Wehrs angehörten. Über den Bund kam es zunächst zur Bekanntschaft mit Claudius, aus der eine intensive Freundschaft erwuchs. Claudius selbst war allerdings kein aktives Mitglied des Göttinger Hains, sondern stand dem Bund lediglich nahe. - Im zweiten Brief an N.N. bittet Claudius um Erklärungs- und Übersetzungshilfe, da nur die lebendige Stimme lehre ("viva vox docet"). 1773 publiziert der Freimaurer, Philosoph und Mystiker Louis Claude de Saint-Martin (1743-1803) sein erstes Buch "Des erreurs et de la vérité", das Claudius unter dem Titel "Irrtümer und Wahrheit" (1782) übersetzt und damit kontroverse Diskussionen in Deutschland auslöst.
