EditorialEncore peu connu, mais redécouvert depuis un demi siècle et partiellement traduit dans le monde francophone, Maxime le Confesseur est, parmi les Pères, l’un des derniers (579÷580−662) mais des plus importants, qui a témoigné par sa vie et son martyre de l’authenticité de sa pensée. Même s’il n’a pas vécu dans les tout premiers siècles, il a été un confesseur de la foi, de la réalité des deux volontés, humaine et divine, dans l’unique personne du Christ, d’où son nom : Maxime le Confesseur. II a su réaliser la synthèse de la patristique antérieure, préparer la transition entre l’époque patristique et le Moyen Age en articulant philosophie et théologie et il a été la référence du Concile de Constantinople III de 680-681 quant à l’affirmation des deux volontés dans le Christ. II serait difficile de reprendre, en l’espace d’un seul numéro de Connaissance d es Pères l’ensemble de son oeuvre. C’est pourquoi, nous avons retenu trois axes : son apport à la christologie, à l’anthropologie et à la liturgie. C’est, tout d’abord, Marie-Lucie Charpin-Ploix, auteur d’une thèse intitulée : Union et différence. Une lecture de la Mystagogie de Maxime le Confesseur, qui, non seulement présente la vie et l’oeuvre de Maxime, mais qui précise aussi l’originalité de sa christologie. Puis, Philippe Gabriel Renczes, spécialiste également de la pensée de Maxime et auteur de l’ouvrage : Agir de Dieu et liberté de l’homme , envisage son anthropologie à partir de cette question centrale qu’est la divinisation de l’être humain. Il montre, alors, comment Maxime reprend et développe cette affirmation bien connue de S. Irénée : « Dieu s’est fait homme pour que l’homme devienne Dieu », en ces termes dans les Ambigua ad Johannem 10 : « Dieu et l ’homme sont des exemples l’un pour l’autre : Dieu s’humanise à cause de son amour pour l’homme autant que l’homme [...] accède, grâce à Dieu, à l’intelligence de l’inconnu dans la mesure où il a rendu visible par ses vertus ce Dieu qui, par nature, est invisible ». Enfin, Dom Gozier explique comment l a Mystagogie met en oeuvre ce double acquis de l’anthropologie et de la christologie pour faire ressortir comment il s’actualise dans la liturgie. Ces trois approches de l’œuvre de Maxime sont, en fait, trois manières d’aborder la divinisation : à partir de la christologie, de l’anthropologie et de la liturgie, les trois étant liées et même indissociables. Ainsi, comme le souligne Dom Gozier : « Noël ne sera pas seulement la fête de la naissance du Christ, ce sera aussi celle de la divinisation de l’humanité » (p. 38). Nous comprenons donc que l’influence de Maxime le Confesseur ait été des plus importantes, par exemple, chez Eckhart et les mystiques rhénans quant à la naissance de Dieu dans l’âme. Cette influence a été rendue possible grâce à la traduction latine des œuvres de Maxime le Confesseur par Jean Scot Erigène au IXe siècle. Marie-Anne VANNIE

Maximus the Confessor (580–662), giant among early Byzantine theologians, stands at the summit of the Greek patristic tradition. He is spokesman of the Greek-speaking “East” in something of the way Thomas Aquinas came to speak for the Latin “West.” His extreme importance as a spiritual writer is evidenced by the huge space assigned to him in the Philokalia. Believing in the intimate link between dogma and prayer, Maximus opposed the heresies of his day with his own unmatched synthesis of Christian truth. For this, he was persecuted and mutilated, and died in exile. The modern rediscovery of Maximus, begun by Western Christian scholars such as Vittorio Croce, Pierre Piret, Hans Urs von Balthasar, Lars Thunberg, and Juan-Miguel Garrigues, has led to an ever-increasing use of his theology and insights by Orthodox and Catholic theologians throughout Europe and North America. Maximus has also become a central point of reference in Catholic-Orthodox dialogue. Maximus the Confessor (c.580-662) has become one of the most discussed figures in contemporary patristic studies. This is partly due to the relatively recent discovery and critical edition of his works in various genres, including On the Ascetic Life, Four Centuries on Charity, Two Centuries on Theology and the Incarnation, On the 'Our Father', two separate Books of Difficulties, addressed to John and to Thomas, Questions and Doubts, Questions to Thalassius, Mystagogy and the Short Theological and Polemical Works. The impact of these works reached far beyond the Greek East, with his involvement in the western resistance to imperial heresy, notably at the Lateran Synod in 649. Together with Pope Martin I (649-53 CE), Maximus the Confessor and his circle were the most vocal opponents of Constantinople's introduction of the doctrine of monothelitism. This dispute over the number of wills in Christ became a contest between the imperial government and church of Constantinople on the one hand, and the bishop of Rome in concert with eastern monks such as Maximus, John Moschus, and Sophronius, on the other, over the right to define orthodoxy. An understanding of the difficult relations between church and state in this troubled period at the close of Late Antiquity is necessary for a full appreciation of Maximus' contribution to this controversy. The editors of this volume aim to provide the political and historical background to Maximus' activities, as well as a summary of his achievements in the spheres of theology and philosophy, especially neo-Platonism and Aristotelianism.
