¿Cómo se debe entender la presencia real de los seres y personajes representados en los rituales y en al arte de los pueblos amerindios? Siguiendo a Gell y a Severi, la idea de que las imágenes tengan “agencia” es actualmente aceptada, pero podría derivar en simplificaciones, ya que los artefactos y otros actores rituales no simplemente tienen agentividad, sino que condensan una multiplicidad de formas de simbolización, en un espectro que va de la representación a la presentificación. Las cosmologías amerindias reconocen el mundo como inestable y el énfasis se pone en la necesidad de controlar los procesos. En este libro se alternan estudios sobre relaciones rituales del presente y del pasado, de diferentes regiones y culturas de México y de los Estados Unidos (huicholes, mexicas y mesoamericanos del Posclásico, pueblo, pawnee, mandan y sitios de las antiguas civilizaciones del Mississippi) con discusiones que problematizan las formas de simbolización en las expresiones rituales y artísticas, tendencias que en antropología se conocen como “relacionales” o “posestructuralistas”. El objetivo es formular un solo enfoque para el arte y el ritual. También explora el vínculo entre la complejidad relacional del ritual con la producción de diversidad: todo indica que el fenómeno de la diversidad de los mundos amerindios tiene que ver con la generación de pluralidad cultural. La diferencia es un valor positivo, tal como lo es la complejidad. Johannes Neurath es maestro en Etnología por la Universidad de Viena y doctor en Antropología por la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. Ha realizado trabajo etnográfico entre huicholes y coras desde 1992. Es Investigador del Museo Nacional de Antropología, miembro del Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (Nivel III), profesor de asignatura en el Posgrado de Estudios Mesoamericanos de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la UNAM. De 2006 a 2012 coordinó un proyecto franco-mexicano sobre antropología del arte. Fue profesor invitado en el Laboratorio de Antropología Social del Collège de France y en el Instituto de Antropología Cultural y Social de la Universidad de Viena. Durante 2014 y 2015 fue reconocido con un Curatorial Fellowship de la Mellon Foundation. Ha publicado dos libros: Las fiestas de la Casa Grande: procesos rituales, cosmovisión y estructura social en una comunidad huichola (Universidad de Guadalajara-Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia, México, 2002) y La vida de las imágenes. Arte huichol (CONACULTA-Artes de México, 2013).

Este libro ofrece una introducción general a las religiones de Mesoamérica. No persigue un fin enciclopedista, sino demostrar que, aun en la época de la hiperespecialización académica, los estudios mesoamericanos integrales no son imposibles. Un aporte fundamental de esta nueva propuesta es impulsar conceptos que no provienen de la teología y de la historia de las religiones, sino de las mismas prácticas indígenas. Términos como politeísmo, cosmología, mitología, sacrificio y oración deberían ser cuestionados, si se pretende entender las religiones mesoamericanas en su propia lógica relacional. Porque en Mesoamérica, la vida ritual trata sobre todo del manejo de relaciones sociales y asuntos prácticos que afectan los diferentes seres del cosmos, humanos y no-humanos. No existe un dualismo metafísico que separe lo espiritual de lo mundano ni las separaciones tajantes entre humanos, animales y otros seres: los dioses son seres cercanos a los humanos y a los demás agentes del cosmos; incluso se les trata como parientes o se les identifica con los ancestros. Pero, al mismo tiempo, también pertenecen a ámbitos de la alteridad que son peligrosos, hasta cierto punto misteriosos u ominosos y, sobre todo, muy difíciles de controlar. Una obra que cuestiona modelos eurocéntricos para estimular la reflexión y el debate.

Since the 1950s, the Sierra Mazateca of Oaxaca, Mexico, has drawn a strange assortment of visitors and pilgrims—schoolteachers and government workers, North American and European spelunkers exploring the region's vast cave system, and counterculturalists from hippies (John Lennon and other celebrities supposedly among them) to New Age seekers, all chasing a firsthand experience of transcendence and otherness through the ingestion of psychedelic mushrooms "in context" with a Mazatec shaman. Over time, this steady incursion of the outside world has significantly influenced the Mazatec sense of identity, giving rise to an ongoing discourse about what it means to be "us" and "them." In this highly original ethnography, Benjamin Feinberg investigates how different understandings of Mazatec identity and culture emerge through talk that circulates within and among various groups, including Mazatec-speaking businessmen, curers, peasants, intellectuals, anthropologists, bureaucrats, cavers, and mushroom-seeking tourists. Specifically, he traces how these groups express their sense of culture and identity through narratives about three nearby yet strange discursive "worlds"—the "magic world" of psychedelic mushrooms and shamanic practices, the underground world of caves and its associated folklore of supernatural beings and magical wealth, and the world of the past or the past/present relationship. Feinberg's research refutes the notion of a static Mazatec identity now changed by contact with the outside world, showing instead that identity forms at the intersection of multiple transnational discourses.
