These are the questions asked in this investigation of a local goddess cult, popular among recent Taiwanese American immigrants in San Francisco, who is venerated as a Sea Goddess and Empress of Heaven, but addressed as Mazu (Granny) by Taiwanese and Taiwanese American devotees. At her San Francisco Chinatown temple, devotees call her "Meiguo Mazu" ("American Mazu").
