Excerpt from Meaning and Practice of Commercial Education In dealing with the problems which the book presents we must begin where we are. Gradual and rational changes in our higher and secondary education and in the education supplementary to elementary education, this is not revolutionary, - and this is the suggestion of the book. It has sometimes been charged against the author that he aims to commercialize the whole school program. If this is understood as set forth'in the fol lowing pages, he accepts the charge. Commercialism has been much bandied about, and not a little misunderstood. Commercial methods are obvious in the work of some who decry commercialism; on the other hand, many business men are altruistic in the best sense. The kind of education urged in this book, it is believed, will teach men the meaning of business and raise commerce above narrow commercialism. Commerce we must have. Excerpt from Commercial Education in Theory and Practice "What is meant by the 'Commercial Education'? How would it differ in its aims, and in the subjects taught, from the education hitherto commonly proposed in an English High School?" is a question which would be found in an Examination Paper set several years ago for Teachers by the Cambridge Syndicate. Here is a term much used of a thing little understood; which some, although supposing they understand, find difficult to define, and others either exaggerate as a cure for all our woes or depreciate as a Continental fad. In the year 1896 the present writer undertook to prepare a General Introduction to the Publishers' "Commercial Series," and the book now issued will fulfil that function. Whilst preparing a Paper for the London Congress of 1897, he decided to attempt to do for Teachers in particular what the Introduction to Commercial Science (first published in 1892 by Messrs. Rivington and Percival) aimed to do for Pupils. The conception of the book therefore enlarged. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Commercial Education in Secondary Schools At the present time, public secondary commercial education, in response to public desire, is rapidly adjusting its work to meet the changing needs of our social and economic Systems. As a result, the public secondary schools are setting Standards that are to dominate secondary commercial instruction. Recognition of the fact that commercial education has a definite place in the public vocational program has resulted in many questions concerning the definition of the field for which commercial education should train, concerning the efficiency of current facilities for commercial education, and concerning the range, methods of organization and presentation of commercial work offered. It is the purpose of this book to analyze such questions as the foregoing, to define commercial education, and to establish fundamental principles by which further progress should be guided. I am greatly indebted to the late Frank V. Thompson (Superintendent of Schools, Boston) for his inspiration and help in the preparation of certain parts of the work, I want to thank Dean Henry W. Holmes, Professor David Sneddcn, and Mr. Vierling Kersey for their criticisms. Mr. F. G. Nichols, State Supervisor of Commercial Education, Pennsylvania, has not only been quoted freely but has given helpful suggestions. My greatest indebtedness is to my wife who has aided in many ways in the preparation of the book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Principles and Methods in Commercial Education: A d104-Book for Teachers, Students, and Business Men The occasion of the publication of a pioneer work on the subject of Principles and Methods in Commercial Education makes it appropriate to review the progress in the field of education which has made this work necessary. The rapid development of commercial education within the past fifteen years, which has been marked by the establishment of secondary and higher schools of commerce, has not only enlarged the concept of business education beyond the clerical aim of the old-time business college, but has also given rise to the need for properly trained teachers in commercial schools. The demand is for teachers who, besides being masters of their subject, are acquainted with the principles and methods of their specialty and have the ability to apply these principles in the class-room. While facilities for training persons for the higher branches of business have been established by universities, and while the literature dealing with this phase is considerable, it is strange that practically nothing has been done thus far to give prospective teachers the pedagogical foundation without which the mastery of the subject alone is inadequate to fit them for the highest attainment in their profession. The universities have sadly neglected the opportunity to offer normal training to commercial teachers, and the lack of literature on methodology is a distinct reflection of this neglect. Excerpt from Education for Business This volume was prepared with the hope, expressed in the preface to the first edition, that it might be of service to general readers and to students in institutions giving teacher training. If the general reader had been the only reader contemplated, the clear expression of a point of view would have been the only matter of primary importance. But to make the book valuable to students, the evidence was laid out in some detail, conflicting attitudes were expressed, questions interpolated, and material otherwise introduced for the constant discussion and reaction of class work. These introductions into the skeleton of thought make it possible for the student to develop a view through his own thinking, but they constitute something of an interference to the reader who wishes to see quickly approach and conclusions only. There has therefore been added in this edition a final chapter which is something of a sketch of the book as a whole. It is hoped that this chapter may serve the general reader as a certification of viewpoint and the student as'a summary as well. As the title of the chapter indicates, there is also the belief that this summarized viewpoint may aid educators in applying the ideas of the book to practical situations. Excerpt from Commercial Education in Public Secondary Schools This book deals with some important contemporary problems of commercial education in secondary schools, considered from the point of View of the investi gator, teacher, and administrative officer, and aims at con structive proposais based on the actual needs of business as it is. These constructive proposals are the outcome of a critical examination of contemporary commercial education in secondary schools, together with certain investigations in the field of business in several cities in the United States, and of earlier studies by the author of commercial education in Europe. The volume also contains, in Chapter VI, Mr. Thompson's report on commercial education in the high schools of the city of New York, constituting a part of my report submitted to the Committee on School Inquiry of the Board of Estimate and Apportionment in 1912. Although, as Mr. Thompson says in his Preface, there is considerable literature on commercial education, it is also true that there is much uncertainty and not a little actual misconception concerning the aims, scope, and methods of education for commercial life in the minds of business men and teachers alike - confusion and misconceptions that in terfere with the formulation of just aims, and prevent profitable endeavor in preparing our young people for busi ness careers. Excerpt from Conference on Commercial Education and Business Progress The dedication of the Commerce Building at the University of Illinois, which was erected during the year 1912, was made the occasion of a Conference on Commercial Education and Business Progress extending over two days, April 16 and 17, 1913. The papers and addresses that were presented on this occasion constitute the present volume. Acknowledgment should be made at this point of the indebtedness of the Director and Faculty of the Courses in Business Administration to the many persons, especially the speakers, whose generous co-operation made this occasion a success. The Commerce Building is the most recent of several new additions to the physical plant at the University of Illinois, and is devoted to the study of economics, commerce, public and private finance, railway administration, money and banking, business organization and management, accountancy, insurance, statistics, and related subjects. In explanation of the significance of the erection and dedication to such uses of this building, a circular was published upon this occasion, which may properly be quoted at this point. The Courses in Business Administration The University of Illinois showed an early interest in the training of business men. The first circular of information published in 1868 declared it to be one of the aims of the institution to prepare men "for the arduous and riskful responsibilities of the merchant and business man." The original nine departments of the University included one of "Commercial Science and Art," in charge of which was placed Captain Edward Snyder, subsequently Professor of German and Dean of the College of Literature and Science.
