Excerpt from The Meaning of the War for Germany and Great Britain: An Attempt at Synthesis The time has come, or is coming, when an attempt at balanced and dispassionate statement should be possible. At last we have a quantity of really authentic material, in the shape of the various Government publications the German White Book, the British Blue (or White) Book, the French Yellow Book, It is not merely prejudice to say that the German Book is the least valuable of these. It was hurried through at the beginning of the war and was the first to appear it contains very few documents, and indeed hardly professes to be more than a summary ex parte statement. Most valuable of all is the French Book, which bears striking testimony to the skill with which the French Foreign Office is served. I Shall do my best to base my case mainly on these official publications. But I have tried besides to bring to bear all the literature on which I could lay my hands and in the last few weeks I have had the advantage of access to a number of German books and pamphlets, which have not been generally available. My chief aim has been - I will not say, to bring about a better understanding between this country and Ger many, because at the present moment there is hardly any mutual understanding at all - but at least to pave the way, or begin to pave the way, for some such better understanding in the future. At the same time I do not think that I shall be more likely to succeed in this attempt by trying to water down the opposition between the two sides. I believe the more hopeful course will be found to be, to face this opposition in all its Sharpness, and - only when we have done this to attempt something in the nature of a more permanent balance or synthesis. I Shall, however, in the process of statement, endeavour to reduce each of the two cases to what I conceive to be more nearly its true dimensions, on the strength of such study as I have been personally able to give to it. I will state the British case first then the German and finally, try to draw out what I believe to be the permanent significance of both. Excerpt from The Cause and Meaning of This War Notwithstanding Germany's official protestations that her great army and navy were designed only for her defense, many years ago and shortly after her war with France, the professors in her universities and the teachers in her schools, in books and in lectures to their classes, carried on a course of instruction which amounted to this: That throughout all the lower animal kingdom the weaker gave way and were exterminated to make room for the stronger and better; that this was equally true of mankind; that the history of man showed the extinction of numberless tribes and races and peo ples, and that this struggle for supremacy must go on; that the German mind and the German character were the highest in the world, and that it was the right and duty of Germany to impress these upon the world by subjugating, and if necessary exterminating, the inferior peoples. The pulpits voiced the same doctrine, thus: The German people is always right, because it is the German people Germany is the future of humanity; The downfall of Germanism would be the downfall of humanity. Germans often claim that 'we have learned the lessons of our history.' But what, precisely, are the lessons they have drawn from their Nazi-era past? What experiences from that time continue to hold significant meaning for Germans today, and how have those experiences shaped postwar German cultural identity? Though Germans have come to recognize the evils of Nazism, for them, its primary evil derived from the war it unleashed and the hardships, death, and destruction that the war wrought on the Germans themselves, and less from the losses and suffering it caused others. Recent public discussion about the Allied bombing campaign against Germany, the expulsion of Germans from Eastern Europe, and other German experiences during and following the Second World War have revealed what some see as an emerging tendency among Germans to perceive themselves as much the victims of wartime acts as other peoples. Through a survey of postwar literature, film, and other popular media, as well as public commemorations and other means of memorializing and discussing the past, K. Michael Prince demonstrates that the theme of German suffering has been an abiding and even overriding element of postwar German historical memory and a chief component of German cultural identity. While academics have focused their attention on Nazism, atrocity and genocide, and while Germany's official ceremonies and other acts of public memory have been similarly directed, it was the wartime sufferings of average Germans that have remained at the core of German historical consciousness, influencing their attitudes toward war in general and shaping Germany's role in world affairs.

For those interested in a more philosphical aspect of war, ‘The Meaning of the War’ by Henri Bergson is a short non-fiction work that explores ‘Life & Matter in Conflict’, as the subtitle of the book tells us. A renowned French philosopher, Bergson delves into the history and politics of war, specifically examining Germany during World War I. This book criticizes the ideology that might is right. A policy that has been fatal for regions that neighbour Germany. To further get insight into the philosophical aspect of war, Sigmund Freud's essay ́Reflections on War and Death ́ provides a great perspective on the modern mental state of people during WWI. Henri Bergson was a French philosopher, born in 1859, who criticised his contemporary Kant, and debated Albert Einstein. In 1927, Bergson won the Nobel Prize in Literature "in recognition of his rich and vitalizing ideas and the brilliant skill with which they have been presented".

A masterful and comprehensive chronicle of World War II, by internationally bestselling historian Antony Beevor. Over the past two decades, Antony Beevor has established himself as one of the world's premier historians of WWII. His multi-award winning books have included Stalingrad and The Fall of Berlin 1945. Now, in his newest and most ambitious book, he turns his focus to one of the bloodiest and most tragic events of the twentieth century, the Second World War. In this searing narrative that takes us from Hitler's invasion of Poland on September 1st, 1939 to V-J day on August 14, 1945 and the war's aftermath, Beevor describes the conflict and its global reach -- one that included every major power. The result is a dramatic and breathtaking single-volume history that provides a remarkably intimate account of the war that, more than any other, still commands attention and an audience. Thrillingly written and brilliantly researched, Beevor's grand and provocative account is destined to become the definitive work on this complex, tragic, and endlessly fascinating period in world history, and confirms once more that he is a military historian of the first rank.
