The surface temperatures of moving rolls have been determined to an accuracy of 2° F. By means of a compensated con tact thermometer. Attempts to determine the approximate temperature of the sur face of the moving rolls by employing fusible substances proved successful on clean, dry surfaces but were unsuccessful when applied to surfaces carrying foreign or contaminating materials. Excerpt from High Temperature Measurement by Electric Means The accurate measurement of high temperatures has come to be a very essential feature of many industrial pro cesses. The pyrometer makes it possible to reproduce with precision any temperature that has been found to yield the best results in Operations requiring careful heat treatment. In the making of tinted glass, for example, the preper regu lation of the temperature of the furnace is necessary to pre vent burning out the color. Instead of depending upon the workman to judge of the condition of the material with his eye, the manufacturer gives instructions to maintain the heat at a certain temperature, knowing then that the output will be of a certain uniform grade. In this manner the variable human element is eliminated and waste prevented. The temper ing of tools, the burning of ceramic products, the Operation of gas producers, the manufacture of iron and steel and the annealing of castings are a few examples of processes that may be carried on to better advantage with the aid of refined methods of measuring high temperatures. The recording pyro meter is rapidly coming into use as an efficient means of eu pervising processes requiring heat treatment. Excerpt from An Evaluation of Dial Thermometers for Measuring Soil Temperature The thermistor used is designated by the manufacturer as model No. 7a disc type thermistor and is the same unit used in the Colman fiber glass soil-moisture element. It is a pellet of metal oxide, silver coated on its opposing sides, inches in diameter and inches thick. The manufacturer's rated resistance is ohms, plus or minus 10 percent at 25 degrees centigrade The resistance of the pellet is sensitive to changes in temperature. Consequently, it can be used to determine-temperature. Each of the two types of thermometers was installed, in duplicate, at h and 8 inch depths in Cecil clay loam soil, covered with a Bermuda grass sod. They were installed in a rectangular block such that there were four of one type in line, spaced about one foot apart, with the first and third thermometer being at the h-inch depth and the second and fourthat the 8 inch depth. This pattern was repeated for the second type with the line of thermometers placed about one foot from the first type and parallel to them. This installation resulted in the two types and depths being equidistant from each other. The dial type thermometers were installed by forcing the stem into the ground to the desired depth. Soil temperatures were read directly in degrees Fahrenheit from the dial scale without disturb ing the thermometers. A point 1 inch from the bottom of the stem was taken as the reference for depth.
