Correct and precise measurements of room acoustic parameters are of fundamental importance for subjective room impression characterization and for the physical description of the sound field. This thesis investigates external influences on acoustic measurements and errors of the resulting room acoustic parameters. Theoretical models have been developed to predict these errors and indicate the tolerable limits of the described influences. To validate these models, specially designed room acoustic measurements that separate the individual influence factors have been conducted. Noise has been identified as one of the main influence factors and occurs during every measurement. In this thesis the performance of five commonly used stationary noise compensation methods are systematically analyzed depending on the peak signal-to-noise ratio. Impulsive noise that could also occur during the measurement is investigated separately, as the previously introduced compensation techniques are unsuited to handle the influence. The second part of this thesis analyzes the influence of time variances during measurements. Inter- and intra-measurement temperature changes, air movement, and human-sized scattering objects have been investigated.

The acoustics of rooms can be objectively described by the room impulse responses obtained for given transfer paths using measurement or simulation. In practice, the directionally dependent behavior of sources and receivers is often disregarded and thus assumed to be of omnidirectional type. In reality, however, these sources and receivers have specific directivity patterns, which are reported to induce audible differences. In this work a methodology to capture, analyze and process directivity patterns of sources and receivers is described. With the help of surrounding spherical microphone and loudspeaker arrays these directivity patterns are measured to be used in room acoustic applications. Room impulse responses with respect to specific directivity patterns can be realized using compact loudspeaker arrays with known directivity. Applying the results of directivity superposition to the set of measured room impulse responses, the acoustics for specific directivity patterns are found. Using a simulation of the room instead, source and receiver directivity patterns can be included in both wave based and particle based methods. The results of this work facilitate more authentic descriptions of room acoustics for specific source and receiver directivity patterns.

Comprises all acoustic phenomena within enclosures. More specifically it deals with the transmission of speech and music in rooms in which some kind of performance is presented and with the propagation of noise in working environments such as factories or large offices.

This thesis summarises research into adaptive room correction for small rooms and pre-recorded material, for example music of films. A measurement system to predict the sound at a remote location within a room, without a microphone at that location was investigated. This would allow the sound within a room to be adaptively manipulated to ensure that all listeners received optimum sound, therefore increasing their enjoyment. The solution presented used small microphone arrays, mounted on the room's walls. A unique geometry and processing system was designed, incorporating three processing stages, temporal, spatial and spectral. The temporal processing identifies individual reflection arrival times from the recorded data. Spatial processing estimates the angles of arrival of the reflections so that the three-dimensional coordinates of the reflections' origin can be calculated. The spectral processing then estimates the frequency response of the reflection. These estimates allow a mathematical model of the room to be calculated, based on the acoustic measurements made in the actual room. The model can then be used to predict the sound at different locations within the room. A simulated model of a room was produced to allow fast development of algorithms. Measurements in real rooms were then conducted and analysed to verify the theoretical models developed and to aid further development of the system. Results from these measurements and simulations, for each processing stage are presented.

Much time is spent working out how to optimize the acoustics of large rooms, such as auditoria, but the acoustics of small rooms and environments can be just as vital. The expensive sound equipment of a recording studio or the stereo in a car or living room is likewise rendered useless if the acoustic environment is not right for them.Changes in wa
