At the intersection of mathematics, computer science, and philosophy, mathematical logic examines the power and limitations of formal mathematical thinking. In this expansion of Leary's user-friendly 1st edition, readers with no previous study in the field are introduced to the basics of model theory, proof theory, and computability theory. The text is designed to be used either in an upper division undergraduate classroom, or for self study. Updating the 1st Edition's treatment of languages, structures, and deductions, leading to rigorous proofs of Gödel's First and Second Incompleteness Theorems, the expanded 2nd Edition includes a new introduction to incompleteness through computability as well as solutions to selected exercises.

The work of which this is an English translation appeared originally in French as Precis de logique mathematique. In 1954 Dr. Albert Menne brought out a revised and somewhat enlarged edition in German (Grund riss der Logistik, F. Schoningh, Paderborn). In making my translation I have used both editions. For the most part I have followed the original French edition, since I thought there was some advantage in keeping the work as short as possible. However, I have included the more extensive historical notes of Dr. Menne, his bibliography, and the two sections on modal logic and the syntactical categories (§ 25 and 27), which were not in the original. I have endeavored to correct the typo graphical errors that appeared in the original editions and have made a few additions to the bibliography. In making the translation I have profited more than words can tell from the ever-generous help of Fr. Bochenski while he was teaching at the University of Notre Dame during 1955-56. OTTO BIRD Notre Dame, 1959 I GENERAL PRINCIPLES § O. INTRODUCTION 0. 1. Notion and history. Mathematical logic, also called 'logistic', ·symbolic logic', the 'algebra of logic', and, more recently, simply 'formal logic', is the set of logical theories elaborated in the course of the last century with the aid of an artificial notation and a rigorously deductive method.

The Summer School and Conference on Mathematical Logic and its Applications, September 24 - October 4, 1986, Druzhba, Bulgaria, was honourably dedicated to the 80-th anniversary of Kurt Godel (1906 - 1978), one of the greatest scientists of this (and not only of this) century. The main topics of the Meeting were: Logic and the Foundation of Mathematics; Logic and Computer Science; Logic, Philosophy, and the Study of Language; Kurt Godel's life and deed. The scientific program comprised 5 kinds of activities, namely: a) a Godel Session with 3 invited lecturers b) a Summer School with 17 invited lecturers c) a Conference with 13 contributed talks d) Seminar talks (one invited and 12 with no preliminary selection) e) three discussions The present volume reflects an essential part of this program, namely 14 of the invited lectures and all of the contributed talks. Not presented in the volltme remai ned si x of the i nvi ted lecturers who di d not submi t texts: Yu. Ershov - The Language of!:-expressions and its Semantics; S. Goncharov - Mathematical Foundations of Semantic Programming; Y. Moschovakis - Foundations of the Theory of Algorithms; N. Introduction To Mathematical Logic Fourth Edition written by Elliott Mendelson and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997-06-01 with Mathematics categories.

The Fourth Edition of this long-established text retains all the key features of the previous editions, covering the basic topics of a solid first course in mathematical logic. This edition includes an extensive appendix on second-order logic, a section on set theory with urlements, and a section on the logic that results when we allow models with empty domains. The text contains numerous exercises and an appendix furnishes answers to many of them. Introduction to Mathematical Logic includes: propositional logic first-order logic first-order number theory and the incompleteness and undecidability theorems of Gödel, Rosser, Church, and Tarski axiomatic set theory theory of computability The study of mathematical logic, axiomatic set theory, and computability theory provides an understanding of the fundamental assumptions and proof techniques that form basis of mathematics. Logic and computability theory have also become indispensable tools in theoretical computer science, including artificial intelligence. Introduction to Mathematical Logic covers these topics in a clear, reader-friendly style that will be valued by anyone working in computer science as well as lecturers and researchers in mathematics, philosophy, and related fields.

A thorough, accessible, and rigorous presentation of the central theorems of mathematical logic . . . ideal for advanced students of mathematics, computer science, and logic Logic of Mathematics combines a full-scale introductory course in mathematical logic and model theory with a range of specially selected, more advanced theorems. Using a strict mathematical approach, this is the only book available that contains complete and precise proofs of all of these important theorems: * Gödel's theorems of completeness and incompleteness * The independence of Goodstein's theorem from Peano arithmetic * Tarski's theorem on real closed fields * Matiyasevich's theorem on diophantine formulas Logic of Mathematics also features: * Full coverage of model theoretical topics such as definability, compactness, ultraproducts, realization, and omission of types * Clear, concise explanations of all key concepts, from Boolean algebras to Skolem-Löwenheim constructions and other topics * Carefully chosen exercises for each chapter, plus helpful solution hints At last, here is a refreshingly clear, concise, and mathematically rigorous presentation of the basic concepts of mathematical logic-requiring only a standard familiarity with abstract algebra. Employing a strict mathematical approach that emphasizes relational structures over logical language, this carefully organized text is divided into two parts, which explain the essentials of the subject in specific and straightforward terms. Part I contains a thorough introduction to mathematical logic and model theory-including a full discussion of terms, formulas, and other fundamentals, plus detailed coverage of relational structures and Boolean algebras, Gödel's completeness theorem, models of Peano arithmetic, and much more. Part II focuses on a number of advanced theorems that are central to the field, such as Gödel's first and second theorems of incompleteness, the independence proof of Goodstein's theorem from Peano arithmetic, Tarski's theorem on real closed fields, and others. No other text contains complete and precise proofs of all of these theorems. With a solid and comprehensive program of exercises and selected solution hints, Logic of Mathematics is ideal for classroom use-the perfect textbook for advanced students of mathematics, computer science, and logic.
