La meccanica computazionale, anche conosciuta come analisi numerica o simulazione numerica, è una disciplina che combina la teoria meccanica con l'uso di algoritmi e tecniche computazionali per risolvere problemi ingegneristici complessi. Utilizza metodi matematici e algoritmi per approssimare soluzioni a problemi di ingegneria che coinvolgono il comportamento dei materiali, la deformazione strutturale, il flusso dei fluidi, il trasferimento di calore e altre fenomenologie fisiche. La meccanica computazionale utilizza principalmente metodi numerici per risolvere le equazioni differenziali parziali che descrivono il comportamento dei sistemi fisici. Questi metodi comprendono l'elemento finito, il metodo dei volumi finiti, il metodo delle differenze finite e altri. Attraverso la discretizzazione dello spazio e del tempo, i problemi complessi possono essere suddivisi in problemi più semplici che possono essere risolti utilizzando calcolatori ad alte prestazioni. L'applicazione della meccanica computazionale è ampia e copre molti settori dell'ingegneria, come l'aerospaziale, l'automobilistico, il civile, il meccanico, l'elettrico e l'energetico. Attraverso la simulazione numerica, è possibile analizzare il comportamento dei sistemi ingegneristici sotto differenti condizioni operative, ottimizzare il design dei componenti, valutare la sicurezza strutturale, prevedere la durata dei materiali e molto altro. Inoltre, la meccanica computazionale ha un ruolo importante nella ricerca scientifica, poiché permette di studiare fenomeni complessi che non possono essere facilmente analizzati tramite metodi tradizionali. Ad esempio, nella meccanica dei fluidi computazionale, si simulano i flussi di fluidi attraverso geometrie complesse, consentendo di studiare l'aerodinamica degli aerei, la dinamica dei fluidi in sistemi di tubazioni e molto altro.
