We present detailed analyses of dwell characteristics of various waveforms of creep fatigue interaction tests performed on the nickel-based superalloy IN 718. We discuss the effects of different dwell modes (strain, stress, and mixed) on creep fatigue properties. Strain dwell tests cause relaxation/accumulation of the mean stress, and stress dwell tests cause accumulation/relaxation of mean strain. True interaction of strain-controlled low cycle fatigue and creep takes place when stress-controlled dwell has been introduced within a strain-controlled cycling. In this article, the effects of pure and mixed modes have been compared in terms of the creep strain accumulation rate at dwell positions. It has been found, irrespective of creep and fatigue, that there is also a second competitive process that goes on, like tensile strain accumulation and compressive strain accumulation. These two processes compete with each other and show a difference in evolution with cycles. Mean strain rates for different stress and mixed control tests have also been determined; by comparing the creep strain accumulation rate and plastic strain rate, the competition of creep and fatigue processes has also been demonstrated in this article. The mechanism of cracking and cavity formation has also been illustrated by computed microtomography and subsequent fractography.

The objective of this investigation was to study the mechanisms of failure under conditions of creep-fatigue interaction, and creep-crack-growth. The approach was to identify the mechanisms and then develop models for describing failure in terms of the loading variables and the microstructure. In the following sections, the results from each topic are summarized. Further details of the work are available in publications. (Author).

Creep Damage And Creep Fatigue Damage Interaction Model For Unidirectional Metal Matrix Composites written by S. Kruch and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Composite materials categories.

A multiaxial, isothermal, continuum damage mechanics model for creep and creep-fatigue interaction of a unidirectional metal-matrix composite (MMC) volume element is presented. The model is phenomenological, stress based, and assumes a single scalar internal damage variable with directional-dependent evolution. The present creep damage model is an extension of the Leckie-Hayhurst creep damage model to unidirectional MMCs and is shown when taken to its isotropic limit, to directly simplify to this previously developed and validated isotropic creep damage model. This extension is accomplished by introducing into the isochronous damage function physically meaningful stress invariants that reflect the local stress and material orientation within a metallic, transversely isotropic material (for example, hexagonally packed unidirectional metal-matrix composite). These invariants are included based on the anticipation that the associated stress may strongly influence void growth at the fiber-matrix interface (as this interface is postulated to play a role, on the mesostructural scale, analogous to that of grain boundaries on the microstructural scale and interfacial degradation); and, consequently may correlate with a creep rupture mechanism based on interfacial degradation through diffusion-related void growth.

This volume contains a selection of peer-reviewed papers presented at the International Conference on Temperature-Fatigue Interaction, held in Paris, May 29-31, 2001, organised by the Fatigue Committee of the Societé Française de Métallurgie et de Matériaux (SF2M), under the auspices of the European Structural Integrity Society. The conference disseminated recent research results and promoting the interaction and collaboration amongst materials scientists, mechanical engineers and design engineers. Many engineering components and structures used in the automotive, aerospace, power generation and many other industries experience cyclic mechanical loads at high temperature or temperature transients causing thermally induced stresses. The increase of operating temperature and thermal mechanical loading trigger the interaction with time-dependent phenomena such as creep and environmental effects (oxidation, corrosion). A large number of metallic materials were investigated including aluminium alloys for the automotive industry, steels and cast iron for the automotive industry and materials forming, stainless steels for power plants, titanium, composites, intermetallic alloys and nickel base superalloys for aircraft industry, polymers. Important progress was observed in testing practice for high temperature behaviour, including environment and thermo-mechanical loading as well as in observation techniques. A large problem which was emphasized is to know precisely service loading cycles under non-isothermal conditions. This was considered critical for numerous thermal fatigue problems discussed in this conference.

Probabilistic Prediction Of Crack Growth Based On Creep Fatigue Damage Accumulation Mechanism written by Zhigang Wei and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2011 with Crack growth categories.

In this paper a deterministic creep/fatigue accumulation model from simple sequential and repetitive creep and fatigue crack growth mechanisms for creep-brittle materials is developed. In the model the maximum stress intensity factor and stress intensity factor range can be used to describe, respectively, the creep and fatigue crack growth behaviors. The probabilistic behavior of the combined creep-fatigue can be calculated by direct integration of a joint log-normal probability density function or other methods. The Monte Carlo simulation method is used in this paper to analyze the probabilistic behavior of the derived deterministic creep-fatigue model and to estimate the reliability of a creep-fatigue correlation as introduced by the uncertainties in both creep and fatigue lives. Predicted results from this new crack growth method are compared with the bi-linear creep-fatigue interaction models as adopted by ASME Code Case N-47 and API579/ASME FFS, and the results are discussed.

This book brings together the theoretical aspects of high-temperature damage phenomena and the practical aspects of assessing the actual damage on a component-specific basis. The first four chapters lay the theoretical foundation with respect to toughness, embrittlement phenomena, creep, fatigue, and creep-fatigue interaction.
