Stimmen. Die Autorin, die 1929 im ostdeutschen Landsberg a. d. Warthe geboren wurde, interpretiert den Medea-Mythos auf feministische Art und Weise neu, wobei sie die männliche Kolonisierungsgeschichte kritisiert, die aus dem Mythos das machte, was wir heute noch von ihm kennen: die Geschichte einer schwarzen Magierin, die zahlreiche Verbrechen begeht und ihre Kinder umbringt. Sie versucht zu zeigen, dass der Mythos instrumentalisiert wurde, um die Herrschaftsstrukturen des Patriarchats zu festigen. Um erzählen zu können, wie es wirklich gewesen ist – so weit man bei einem Mythos von einem Wirklichkeitsanspruch sprechen kann – versucht sie in die tiefen Schichten einzutauchen, den Kern aus den zahlreichen Bearbeitungen herauszuschälen. Bei ihren Recherchen findet sie u. a. Unterstützung von der Anthropologin Heide Göttner-Abendroth. Der Roman zeigt, wie weit Menschen bereit sind zu gehen, um ihre Macht zu sichern, und dass Geschichte immer von den Siegern geschrieben wird. Medea, die als moralische und hilfsbereite Person dargestellt wird, wird zum Sündenbock, zum Opfer, das sich gegen Verleumdungen und Intrigen nicht wehren kann. „Sie haben aus jedem von uns den gemacht, den sie brauchen“, sagt Medea zu Jason. „Aus dir den Heroen, und aus mir die böse Frau“ Die vorliegende Arbeit geht in diesem Zusammenhang auf Medeas Herkunft ein, die in vielem einen Gegensatz zum patriarchalen Korinth darstellt, was erklärt, warum Medea dort immer eine Fremde bleibt. Des Weiteren werden wichtige Motive behandelt, die in der Rezeptionsgeschichte immer wieder aufgegriffen wurden, wie zum Beispiel das der Kindsmörderin. Denn all diese Aspekte behandelt auch Christa Wolf, weist ihnen allerdings eine andere Bedeutung zu, die die Gestalt der Medea schließlich in einem vollkommen anderen Licht erscheinen lässt. 2 Matriarchat - Patriarchat Obwohl darüber immer noch keine Einigkeit herrscht, wird heute von vielen Forschern davon ausgegangen, dass die Menschheit über die meiste Zeit in einem Matriarchat, beziehungsweise zumindest in einer Gesellschaftsform mit starken matriarchalen Strukturen, lebte. In Medea. Stimmen stellt Christa Wolf mit Kolchis eine Kultur im Übergang zum Patriarchat und mit Korinth eine Stadt dar, die bereits patriarchalisiert ist. Daher weisen beiden einige Gemeinsamkeiten, aber auch zahlreiche Unterschiede auf. Zuvor soll noch auf eine genauere Definition des Matriarchatsbegriffs eingegangen werden.

The fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 marked the end of East Germany’s socialist regime and a new beginning for a unified German Federal Republic. Cultural historians agree that the event caused one of the deepest rifts in time and thinking seen by an entire generation of Germans—a rift that left its mark on the psyche of every citizen, challenging notions of the personal and the political, and crashing traditional understandings of the individual and the collective self. In this bold rethinking of the question, Cheryl Dueck goes beyond the social, political, and psychological discourses that Marx and Freud, Foucault and Lacan viewed as the initiators of modern (socialist) identities to explore the literature and discourse of the quest for unity of the female subject. Reading such authors as Christa Wolf, Brigitte Reimann, Helga Königsdorf, and Helga Schubert, Dueck traces the striking fissures which run through time and through the female self, haunting women within the socialist project. The book shows how two generations of women writers have struggled consciously and systematically in their letters, aesthetic writings, and literary production to create a new language to express their own sense of self within a restrictive socialist and patriarchal system. Rifts in Time and in the Self offers an unprecedented look at the reconceptualizations of the female subject during several phases of GDR history, and women writers’ persistent attempt to carve out spaces of identity and community.
