The ′demotic turn′ is a term coined by Graeme Turner to describe the increasing visibility of the ′ordinary person′ in the media today. In this dynamic and insightful book he explores the ′whys′ and ′hows′ of the ′everyday′ individual′s willingness to turn themselves into media content through: · Celebrity culture, · Reality TV, · DIY websites, · Talk radio, · User-generated materials online. Initially proposed in order to analyse the pervasiveness of celebrity culture, this book further develops the idea of the demotic turn as a means of examining the common elements in a range of ′hot spots′ in debates within media and cultural studies today. Refuting the proposition that the demotic turn necessarily carries with it a democratising politics, this book examines the political and cultural function of the demotic turn in media production and consumption across the fields of reality TV, print and electronic news and current affairs journalism, citizen and online journalism, talk radio, and user-generated content online. It examines these fields in order to outline a structural shift in what the western media has been doing lately, and to suggest that these media activities represent something much more fundamental than contemporary media fashion.

Lines In The Sand written by Gregory Noble and has been published by Institute of Criminology this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009 with Multiculturalism categories.

On the infamous afternoon of Sunday 11 December 2005, a crowd of about 5000, mostly white, English-speaking background young men, went on a rampage at Sydney's Cronulla beach attacking anyone of 'Middle Eastern appearance'. The day had begun as a protest against what many saw as the unacceptable behaviour of some young men following a scuffle between off-duty lifesavers and a group of Lebanese men. Such incidents are not uncommon, yet rarely do they lead to large-scale, ethnically motivated violence in which people wrap themselves in the Australian flag. Many Australians, used to seeing racial violence in other parts of the world, were shell-shocked. Yet the causes and consequences of the riots and the revenge attacks that ensued are still being debated. Did the riots reveal the 'racist underbelly' of Australian society? Did they demonstrate the failure of the multicultural experiment of the last 30 years? Were they yet another example of the contemporary problems of youthful masculinities? Were we seeing the resurgence of an ugly nationalism, spread by populist media? In this provocative and insightful collection of essays, the authors examine these and other issues in the first major critical assessment of this significant moment in Australian history.

Freedom Of Speech And Islam written by Erich Kolig and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-04-15 with Social Science categories.

Freedom of speech and expression is considered in the West a high public good and an important social value, underpinned by legislative and ethical norms. Its importance is not shared to the same extent by conservative and devout Muslims, who read Islamic doctrines in ways seemingly incompatible with Western notions of freedom of speech. Since the Salman Rushdie affair in the 1980s there has been growing recognition in the West that its cherished value of free speech and associated freedoms relating to arts, the press and media, literature, academia, critical satire etc. episodically clash with conservative Islamic values that limit this freedom for the sake of holding religious issues sacrosanct. Recent controversies - such as the Danish cartoons, the Charlie Hebdo affair, Quran burnings, and the internet film ’The Innocence of Muslims’ which have stirred violent reactions in the Muslim world - have made the West aware of the fact that Muslims’ religious sensitivities have to be taken into account in exercising traditional Western freedoms of speech. Featuring experts across a spectrum of fields within Islamic studies, Freedom of Speech and Islam considers Islamic concepts of blasphemy, apostasy and heresy and their applicability in the modern world.

Muslim Active Citizenship In The West written by Mario Peucker and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-04-03 with Religion categories.

Muslim Active Citizenship in the West investigates the emergence and nature of Muslims’ struggle for recognition as full members of society in Australia, Great Britain and Germany. What actions have been taken by Muslims to achieve equal civic standing? How do socio-political and socio-economic factors impact on these processes? And how do Muslims negotiate their place in a society that is often regarded as sceptical – if not hostile – towards Muslims’ desire to belong? This book sheds new light on Muslims’ path towards citizenship in Australia, Great Britain and Germany. Existing research and statistics on Muslims’ socio-economic status, community formation, claim-making and political responses, and the public portrayal of Islam are systematically examined. These insights are tested ‘through the eyes of Muslims’, based on in-depth interviews with Muslim community leaders and other experts in all three countries. The findings offer unique perspectives on Muslim resilience to be recognised as equal citizens of Islamic faith in very different socio-political national settings. Pursuing an interdisciplinary and comparative approach, this book examines the country-specific interplay of historical, institutional, political, and identity dimensions of Muslims’ active citizenship and will be invaluable for students and researchers with an interest in Sociology, Religious Studies and Political Science.
