Since its inception in the West, reality TV has been widely debated from various standpoints. The popularity of the genre in the West was mirrored in the Arab w orld with the rise of reality-based broadcasting as a media goldmine. Just as it attracted the attention of devout followers in the West, the Arab world's youth , and more specifically Lebanese youth, have become hooked to these imported tel evision programs. Combining several critical theoretical approaches to assess this phenomenon, t his study employs Gabriel Weimann's version of the 'Double Cone Model' (Weimann, 2000) as a guideline. The first section of the study focuses on the relationshi p between actual reality and the 'Constructed Mediated Reality' (CMR) through th e content analysis of a sample of the reality talent show Star Academy II. The s econd part surveys the viewing habits of high school students in Lebanon and the possible effects the show could have on their perception of their own social re ality, i.e. the relationship between the CMR and the 'Perceived Mediated Reality ' (PMR). The research revealed that the CMR presented through reality TV shows such as S tar Academy are in fact foreign models of social conduct. They simply serve to n aturalize this type of content by typifying the rules for the construction of on e's social reality through reinforcing the structures of a foreign value system and thus promoting a westernized youth culture. Yet with increased viewer-ship comes an increase in the level of conservatism. This could be seen as a reaction to this imposed CMR, which contradicts the loca l values and norms. Thus, viewers tend to reject this type of content through be coming reactionary and thus more conservative. In this sense, the process of cu ltivation works reversely acting as a source of negative reinforcement. This research aspires to serve as a stepping-stone towards alerting Arab media networks to refrain from imposing such imported reality on Arab culture. Instead , they should develop more locally inspired shows, which portray Arab reality an d true Arab youth culture, promoting local creativity and seeking to elevate the cultural standards of television, instead of simply aiming for over-inflated ad vertising revenues.
