Excerpt from Evolution and Disease Most persons believe Pathology, as the Science Of Disease is called, to be so outside the comprehension of ordinary individuals, and even in its general bearings so utterly devoid of interest to all but medical men, that much misconception prevails in the minds of even educated persons in regard to its fundamental principles. As a matter of fact Pathology is only a department of Biology, and it is very important to bear this in mind if. We Wish to study successfully the origin, cause, and spread of disease. Yet paradoxical as it seems, whilst so many regard Pathology as occupying an isolated position among sciences, medical writers always point out the difficulty they find in framing a definition of disease, and indeed the impossibility of stating where health ends and disease begins. Excerpt from The Evolution of Physiological and Chemical Science in a Natural System of Medicine, Vs. The Theories and Fallacies of Popular Medicine The phenomena of progress is a subject of great interest to the philanthropist, especially from the fact that in all ages there has been manifested a spirit of opposition against all changes that tend to disturb institutions that have been the growth of centuries. The pioneers of knowledge have always been forced to meet this opposition in the form of intolerance which greatly prevented the opportunities for the advance of truth. Authoritative bigotry and selfishness have ruled mankind with an iron rod that has perpetuated a mental slavery which has kept the world in ignorance and chains. Excerpt from Outlines of Evolutionary Biology The student, if he studies Biology at all for its own sake, which is seldom the case, usually confines himself almost entirely to one or other of these branches, which he finds treated more or less as an independent science, with an extensive literature of its own, and he runs a grave risk of losing sight of the general principles which underlie all and from which all derive their chief educational value. The medical student, it is true, usually takes a year's course in what is called Biology, but his curriculum is, perhaps unavoidably, dominated by the type-system and by what is thought likely to be of direct service to him in his future anatomical and physiological studies, so that in the brief time which the medical authorities allow him to devote to the scientific foundation of his professional work he has but little opportunity for a philosophical treatment of the subject. Excerpt from The Evolution of Modern Medicine: A Series of Lectures Delivered at Yale University on the Silliman Foundation, in April, 1913 In the year 1883 a legacy of eighty thousand dollars was left to the President and Fellows of Yale College in the city of New Haven, to be held in trust, as a gift from her children, in memory of their beloved and honored mother, Mrs. Hepsa Ely Silliman. On this foundation Yale College was requested and directed to establish an annual course of lectures designed to illustrate the presence and providence, the wisdom and goodness of God, as manifested in the natural and moral world. These were to be designated as the Mrs. Hepsa Ely Silliman Memorial Lectures. It was the belief of the testator that any orderly presentation of the facts of nature or history contributed to the end of this foundation more effectively than any attempt to emphasize the elements of doctrine or of creed; and he therefore provided that lectures on dogmatic or polemical theology should be excluded from the scope of this foundation, and that the subjects should be selected rather from the domains of natural science and history, giving special prominence to astronomy, chemistry, geology and anatomy. It was further directed that each annual course should be made the basis of a volume to form part of a series constituting a memorial to Mrs. Silliman. The memorial fund came into the possession of the Corporation of Yale University in the year 1901; and the present volume constitutes the tenth of the series of memorial lectures. Excerpt from Organ and Function: A Study of Evolution A preface is customary, usually unnecessary and always an annoyance. In conclusion, then, let me say, if I were to express my admiration for those naturalists whose views I have ven tured to criticise I must write another chapter, and if I acknowledged my indebtedness to them I should be bankrupt of thanks. Excerpt from Heredity, Disease and Human Evolution A knowledge of the leading peculiarities of disease is evidently an essential preliminary to the consideration of the significance Of diseases in the process of human evo lution. One who wishes to speak of disease must know what it is. But we do not need, for such an exposition, the strictly scientific groundwork of knowledge possessed by the pathological expert. It will suffice to start with a clear definition as to the essential nature Of disease, one which will give us a general understanding Of the influence of this process upon the bodily and mental capacity of the individual human being, and in association therewith upon the race as a whole.
