Objectives:To report a case of burning mouth syndrome (BMS) and do a literature review about BMS.Background:BMS is a chronic pain condition, of hot painful sensation, localized at the oral mucosa without clinically evident causes. The pathophysiology is poorly understood, is probably a multifactorial condition, with interactions between neurophysiological and psychological factors. We report the case of a 62-year-old woman, with previous diagnosis of dystimia, with pain and burning sensation in oral mucosa and dysgeusia, observed by several medical specialties for the past 7 years, with no conclusive diagnosis.Materials and Methods:Literature review using PubMed database, over a 5-year period, and without a specific type of study. Results and Conclusions:Prevalence ranges from 0.7 to 18%, increases with age, especiJoally among peri- or post- menopausal women, and the mean age of diagnosis is 59,4 years. The etiology of BMS remains unknow. BMS symptoms include burning pain or discomfort at the oral mucosa, ranging from moderate to severe, for several months or years. Usually the pain is spontaneous, bilateral, affecting any part of oral cavity with no associated injury or clinical manifestation. The diagnosis is clinical and of exclusion.Although various treatment modalities, including pharmacological and non-pharmacological (e.g. psychotherapies) interventions have been proposed, there is no definitive treatment. This case report shows the management, diagnosis and treatment challenges of BMS and demonstrates an example of high consume of healthcare resources and a very poor prognosis in terms of lifeu2019s quality.

Life pours into emergency departments with a distinct flavor. The Lady Whose Mouth I Set on Fire . . . and Other True Tales from the ER gives you a big helping of this dish with dozens of stories that are too bizarre, too horrific, or too hilarious to be true--but they are. Every single story is true and can be relied upon for the reader's education and enlightenment in medicine or in life. The author, an emergency physician with three decades worth of tales, is looking hard to find humor anywhere he can. Laughter may not always be the best medicine, but it's sometimes the only one."I would like to go on record as saying this is the best book I have ever read," gushes an anonymous reader.

Classical Chinese Medicine written by Liu Lihong and has been published by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-04-19 with Medical categories.

The English edition of Liu Lihong’s milestone work is a sublime beacon for the profession of Chinese medicine in the 21st century. Classical Chinese Medicine delivers a straightforward critique of the politically motivated “integration” of traditional Chinese wisdom with Western science during the last sixty years, and represents an ardent appeal for the recognition of Chinese medicine as a science in its own right. Professor Liu’s candid presentation has made this book a bestseller in China, treasured not only by medical students and doctors, but by vast numbers of non-professionals who long for a state of health and well-being that is founded in a deeper sense of cultural identity. Oriental medicine education has made great strides in the West since the 1970s, but clear guidelines regarding the “traditional” nature of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) remain undefined. Classical Chinese Medicine not only delineates the educational and clinical problems faced by the profession in both East and West, but transmits concrete and inspiring guidance on how to effectively engage with ancient texts and designs in the postmodern age. Using the example of the Shanghanlun (Treatise on Cold Damage), one of the most important Chinese medicine classics, Liu Lihong develops a compelling roadmap for holistic medical thinking that links the human body to nature and the universe at large.

'My first serious blackout marked the line between sanity and insanity. Though I would have moments of lucidity over the coming days and weeks, I would never again be the same person ...' Susannah Cahalan was a happy, clever, healthy twenty-four-year old. Then one day she woke up in hospital, with no memory of what had happened or how she had got there. Within weeks, she would be transformed into someone unrecognizable, descending into a state of acute psychosis, undergoing rages and convulsions, hallucinating that her father had murdered his wife; that she could control time with her mind. Everything she had taken for granted about her life, and who she was, was wiped out. Brain on Fire is Susannah's story of her terrifying descent into madness and the desperate hunt for a diagnosis, as, after dozens of tests and scans, baffled doctors concluded she should be confined in a psychiatric ward. It is also the story of how one brilliant man, Syria-born Dr Najar, finally proved - using a simple pen and paper - that Susannah's psychotic behaviour was caused by a rare autoimmune disease attacking her brain. His diagnosis of this little-known condition, thought to have been the real cause of devil-possessions through history, saved her life, and possibly the lives of many others. Cahalan takes readers inside this newly-discovered disease through the progress of her own harrowing journey, piecing it together using memories, journals, hospital videos and records. Written with passionate honesty and intelligence, Brain on Fire is a searingly personal yet universal book, which asks what happens when your identity is suddenly destroyed, and how you get it back. 'With eagle-eye precision and brutal honesty, Susannah Cahalan turns her journalistic gaze on herself as she bravely looks back on one of the most harrowing and unimaginable experiences one could ever face: the loss of mind, body and self. Brain on Fire is a mesmerizing story' -Mira Bartók, New York Times bestselling author of The Memory Palace Susannah Cahalan is a reporter on the New York Post, and the recipient of the 2010 Silurian Award of Excellence in Journalism for Feature Writing. Her writing has also appeared in the New York Times, and is frequently picked up by the Daily Mail, Gawker, Gothamist, AOL and Yahoo among other news aggregrator sites.
