Excerpt from Die Therapie der Gegenwart, 1899, Vol. 40: Medicinisch-Chirurgische Rundschau für Praktische Ärzte Soll dieses Verfahren ein wirklich wissen schaftliches werden, so bedarf der Arzt eben der genauen Kenntniss von dem Ve r laufe der Krankheit (decursus morbi). Das setzt voraus, dass die Krankheit in der That "verläuft, oder wie der neueste, un barmherzige Ausdruck lautet, dass sie sich "abspielt. Man wolle nicht vergessen, dass von jeher die Aerzte auch von einem lusus naturae Sprachen, aber sie meinten damit nicht den Verlauf einer Krankheit, sondern ein Product derselben. Als Natur spiele bezeichnete man vielmehr gewisse Uebel, deren Ursache mysteriös und deren Entstehung durch Beobachtung nicht zu erkennen war. In Erinnerung an diesen Sprachgebrauch sollte die junge Schule sich an eine objective und dem menschlichen Gefühl mehr entsprechende Ausdrucksweise gewöhnen. Je mehr man sich an den zu beobachtenden Verlauf hält, um so sicherer wird man in der Diagnose und in der Prognose der Krankheiten und auch der meisten Uebel verfahren. Das Kriterium für die Richtigkeit der Beobachtung ist darin zu suchen, dass man die Zeiten (tempora morbi) empirisch feststellen und daraus die Aufeinanderfolge der Stadien berechnen kann. Das ist bei manchen Krankheiten in der That erreicht und daraus resultirt die Zuverlässigkeit ihrer Diagnose und Prognose. Vorzugsweise gilt dies für die fieberhaften Krankheiten oder, wie man sie bis in dieses jahrhundert hinein aufge fasst hat, die sogenannten Allgemein krankheiten.
