George Whitefield 1714-1770 Nacido en Gloucester, Inglaterra; el evangelista más conocido del siglo XVIII y uno de los mayores predicadores itinerantes de la historia de las iglesias de Jesucristo. Whitefield colaboró con Juan y Carlos Wesley en el establecimiento del "Club Sagrado" durante sus estudios en la Universidad de Oxford. Por la gracia de Dios, Whitefield experimentó una auténtica conversión y llegó a ver que su "santidad" era sólo trapos sucios. Se dio cuenta de que necesitaba descansar por la fe en la obra terminada de Cristo y comenzó a predicar fervientemente la necesidad de la regeneración.Whitefield fue un ministro ordenado de la Iglesia de Inglaterra. Cuando la oposición a su predicación le cerró las puertas de las iglesias, se puso al frente de la predicación al aire libre y viajó a donde pudo para difundir el mensaje de salvación. Compartió esta labor con los Wesley. Fue usado poderosamente por Dios en Inglaterra y en las colonias americanas durante el "Gran Despertar", y predicó incesantemente la gracia soberana de Dios, la necesidad del nuevo nacimiento por la sola fe en la Persona y obra de Jesucristo. En Nueva Inglaterra, en 1740, predicó a multitudes de hasta ocho mil personas casi todos los días durante más de un mes. Esta gira fue uno de los episodios más notables de toda la historia del cristianismo estadounidense y un acontecimiento clave en el renacimiento de Nueva Inglaterra. Whitefield murió en 1770 en las colonias americanas en medio de una gira de predicación, tal y como había deseado.
