"A remarkable approach to the classic Yogic text, The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali - A Visual Meditation, is both a traditional, well-informed, translation of Book One of the Yoga Sutras, with commentary; and it is sophisticated art book, with full color, full page reproductions of the beautiful and evocative paintings, one for each sutra, created as meditative guides in response to the author's years of work, studying, working with, and translating the Yoga Sutras. The sutras themselves are in the original Devanagari, with transliteration, translation and succinct, accessible, grounded commentary, which draws upon author and artist Melissa Townsend's 30+ years of spiritual practice./The book is as accurate and useful as it is lovely. A graduate of Brown University, Phi Beta Kappa, Magna Cum Laude, along with her years of spiritual practice and study of Sanskrit, Ms. Townsend's many years' experience as an internationally known psychic, speaking to people one-on-one about their lives, informs her writing as well, helping to make the commentary clear, practical, human and delightfully accessible. Wry and warm, as well as knowledgeable, her writing brings an important yogic text into clear focus, while the artwork takes the book to an entirely new level./The work of Sanskrit and of the Yoga Sutras is to push one along the path towards Enlightenment. To this end, the Yoga Sutras "mean" both exactly what they "say," and each one means infinitely more. That, "infinitely more," is expressed through the remarkable artwork in this book."--The publisher.

Visual Meditations On The Universe written by James S. Perkins and has been published by Quest Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1984 with Art categories.

Literally, this book is a work of art--a graphic kaleidoscope of creation and evolution according to the theosophical tradition. James S. Perkins, a devoted student of the Ancient Wisdom, has rendered the story of life--the entire panorama of the cosmic scene--in vivid graphics, the colors of creation. His paintings depict the evolution of the universe, and of mankind, as put forth in that quintessential synthesis of science, religion, and philosophy, The Secret Doctrine of H.P. Blavatsky. The story that unfolds through the graphics and text takes the reader on a figurative but profoundly sensitive journey through space and time and beyond. Visual Meditations is designed to provoke a meditative mood in the reader, which can lead to new metaphysical insights that touch upon the transcendental element of our consciousness. It is indeed a stunning overview of the cosmos in which the basic tenets of theosophy are ably demonstrated through the genius of the art form.

Isabelle Robinet's Taoist Meditation is the first and only scholarly study to discuss the ancient Mao-shan Taoist tradition of visionary meditation while, at the same time, helping to clarify the little understood relationship among the early Taoist classics, the Buddhist tradition, and the later Taoist religion. Most importantly, Taoist Meditation is a pioneering study that fully and accurately describes the unique visionary cosmology, bodily symbolism, astral journeys, internal alchemy, meditational techniques, and ritual practices of the Mao-shan or Shang-chi'ing (Great Purity) movement--one of the most important foundational traditions making up the overall Taoist religion. This English version of Robinet's work is more than a simple translation.Taoist Meditation presents a significantly expanded edition of the original French text which includes up-to-date bibliographies of Robinet's work and other Western scholarship on Taoism, additional illustrations, and a newly compiled list of textual citations.

A comprehensive treatment of visionary experience in some of the main texts of Jewish mysticism, this book reveals the overwhelmingly visual nature of religious experience in Jewish spirituality from antiquity through the late Middle Ages. Using phenomenological and critical historical tools, Wolfson examines Jewish mystical texts from late antiquity, pre-kabbalistic sources from the tenth to the twelfth centuries, and twelfth- and thirteenth-century kabbalistic literature. His work demonstrates that the sense of sight assumes an epistemic priority in these writings, reflecting and building upon those scriptural passages that affirm the visual nature of revelatory experience. Moreover, the author reveals an androcentric eroticism in the scopic mentality of Jewish mystics, which placed the externalized and representable form, the phallus, at the center of the visual encounter. In the visionary experience, as Wolfson describes it, imagination serves a primary function, transmuting sensory data and rational concepts into symbols of those things beyond sense and reason. In this view, the experience of a vision is inseparable from the process of interpretation. Fundamentally challenging the conventional distinction between experience and exegesis, revelation and interpretation, Wolfson argues that for the mystics themselves, the study of texts occasioned a visual experience of the divine located in the imagination of the mystical interpreter. Thus he shows how Jewish mystics preserved the invisible transcendence of God without doing away with the visual dimension of belief.

Buddhist meditation, while attracting less popular attention than some other meditative disciplines, has given rise to a particularly rich literature in recent years. Despite differences in style and terminology, these modern writings on Buddhist meditation serve much the same purposes as did the manuals and commentaries of the classical masters: to explicate and interpret the Buddha's teachings on meditation, to clarify the nature and value of the various meditative techniques and attainments, and/or to offer advice on the actual practice of meditation. Meditators are increasingly inclined to compare and evaluate critically what the different contemporary meditation masters have to say, to weigh up the results of relevant scientific studies, or to consult translations of the primary texts in search of the Buddha's 'original' teachings on meditation. Writers on meditation are also increasingly adopting an appropriately critical approach, particularly as regards the reliability of textual accounts. Relatively few still commit the old error of assuming that the Pali canon is a complete and faithful record of what the Buddha said on the subject, or that the classical commentators were infallible authorities. The present collection of twenty-eight readings is designed to give meditators, researchers, and general readers ready access to representative samples of those writings, and to the principal relevant texts.

D Gen S Texts written by Ralf Müller and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-12-27 with Philosophy categories.

This book addresses the question of how to properly handle Dōgen’s texts, a core issue that became critical during the Meiji period in which the philosophical appropriation of Dōgen became apparent inside and outside of the monastery. In present day Dōgen studies, most scholarship is informed by a number of factions representing Dōgen. The chapters herein address: the Zennist (j. zenjōka) emphasising practice, the Genzōnians (j. genzōka) shifting the attention to the close reading of Dōgen’s texts, the laity movement opening up both the texts and the practice to people in modern society, and the Genzō researchers (j. genzō kenkyūka) searching for the authenticity and truth of Dōgen’s writings. The book aims to clarify the rightful place of Dōgen: in the monastery, in denominational studies, or in modern academic philosophy? It brings forth various viewpoints on Dōgen, and analyzes the relations of these viewpoints from the premodern to modern times. The collected volume appeals to students and researchers in the field while establishing hermeneutic standards of reading and proposing new, original, and critical interpretations of Dōgen’s texts. Teach Us To Pray written by Katharine Mahon and has been published by Rowman & Littlefield this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-04-01 with Religion categories.

The study of liturgical reform is usually undertaken through a close examination of liturgical texts. In order to consider the impact of reform on the worship life of Christians, Katharine Mahon takes a wider view of liturgy by considering the worship practices of Christian churches beyond what appears in the rites themselves. Looking at how Christians were taught how to pray and instructed in liturgical and sacramental participation, Mahon explores the late medieval patterns of Christian ritual formation and the transformation of these patterns in the sixteenth-century reforms of Martin Luther, Thomas Cranmer, and Roman Catholic leaders. She uses the Lord’s Prayer—the backbone of medieval lay catechesis, liturgical participation, and private prayer—to paint a panorama of medieval ritual formation integrated into the life of the church in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. She then follows the disintegration and reconstruction of that system of formation through the changing functions of the Lord’s Prayer in the official reforms of catechesis, liturgy, and prayer in the sixteenth-century.
