It is mainly within and around Mediterranean itineraries that the European Union seeks its in/tangible cultural heritage, an important component of both individual and collective identities. This volume brings together many different strands of analysis, helping to shed light on the multifaceted entities that constitute the socio-semiotic landscape of the Mediterranean. It views this vibrant scenario from a cross-cultural perspective, and investigates the domains of national identities and stereotypes, advertising and social media, TV series, myths and festivals, landscapes, culture-bound terms, migrating words, and food. More specifically, some chapters revolve around issues of intra-/inter-group identities in the context of itineraries of recent or historical migrations, and how such variegated identities are re-shaped by and through the media, in a dynamic interplay of symbols and clichés. In the same vein, gender issues are also addressed in a dimension suspended between tradition and modernity, with a special focus on Turkish women. The multi-dimensional Turkish culture and landscape are also voiced through an example of blended American/Turkish children’s literature. Other chapters explore the language of tourism in the diverse multimodal representations and textualizations of the tourist experience in Mediterranean destinations, mainly expressed through social media. The contemporary appreciation of the Mediterranean Diet as a global cultural heritage is also explored through the magnifying lens of such media. Given the variety of perspectives and methodological approaches adopted by the contributors, this volume offers useful insights to students and practitioners of discourse analysis alike. From an educational perspective, the book, which also includes practical worksheets, can be used in first- and second-level degrees in Foreign Languages, Communication, Political Sciences, Media and Cultural Studies, as well as specific courses in linguistics, multimodal studies, critical discourse analysis and corpus linguistics. The underlying rationale of the book is its concentration on the prominent role of English in representing the Mediterranean heritage, despite the fact that it is a non-Mediterranean language. At the same time, the volume bridges the gap between academic research and class practice at the university level.

Mediterranean Heritage, first published in 1978, offers a wide-ranging and perceptive discussion of the often concealed links between English culture and the common heritage of Western Europe: the Graeco-Roman legacy of the Mediterranean. Appearing at a time which England is more obviously a part of Europe than she has been for sixteen hundred years, this book provides valuable insights into the origins of our culture's greatest achievements.

This book contains the thirty papers delivered at the International Archaeological Conference in Athens, 10-13 May 2005. These papers are selected essays from the conference which was organised within the framework of the project Crossings: Movements of People and Movement of Cultures - Changes in the Mediterranean from Ancient to Modern Times , a project that had been initiated by the Pierides Foundation. All contributors to this volume discuss various issues of Mediterranean archaeology along two broad thematic sessions: The first one was devoted to recent advances in theory and in fieldwork that had significantly contributed to our understanding of key themes in Mediterranean archaeology. Scholars contributed papers related to issues such as the movement of people and the circulation of objects and ideas throughout the Mediterranean during prehistory and history. Specific areas of interest covered cultural diffusion and indigenous development, local identity and regional processes, population movement, object biographies, trade and gift exchange, islandscapes vs. landscapes, travel and transport technologies, and colonisation. The second general theme broadened the conference discussion through an interdisciplinary debate concerning the sociopolitical implications of the 'postmodern' agenda in the present and the impact of this agenda on the study of the Mediterranean past. The sessions related to this theme addressed contemporary concerns with the cultural heritage of the Mediterranean as a source of social identities and common heritage. Issues concerning the use (and abuse) of the Mediterranean past and identity in the present, the politics of the Mediterranean past, and perceptions of how the region's heritage is or should be perceived were central to this section. The subject matter of the volume covers long time span from the Neolithic to contemporary times. The volume embraces the Eastern, Central and Western basins of the Mediterranean.

The contributions in this collection offer a wide range of stylistic perspectives on landscape, place and environment, by focusing on a variety of text-types ranging from poetry, the Bible, fictional and non-fictional prose, to newspaper articles, condo names, online texts and exhibitions. Employing both established and cutting-edge methodologies from, among others, corpus linguistics, metaphor studies, Text World Theory and ecostylistics, the eleven chapters in the volume provide an overview of how landscape, place and environment are encoded and can be investigated in literary and non-literary discourse. The studies collected here stand as evidence of the possibility of, and the need for, a “stylistics of landscape”, which emphasises how represented spaces are made manifest linguistically; a “stylistics of place”, which focuses on the discursive and affective qualities of those represented spaces; and a “stylistics of environment”, which reiterates the urgency for environmentally-responsible humanities, able to support a change in the anthropocentric narrative which poses humans as the most important variable in the human-animal and human-environment relationships.
