Phoenicians are amazing. Sea farers, artisans and entrepreneurs from Lebanon around 1000 BCE, they had bit parts in the Bible, Homer and Egyptian and Roman history then pop out of ancient books on great adventures, spreading trade and ideas across the Mediterranean and contributing to the development of global civilisation. They had an impact on humanity that we still benefit from, and learn from, today. We also explore their dark side: slavery, child sacrifice and institutional prostitution. This book is unlike any other: it is an epic poem, a travel guide, a history book, a self-help manual, an auto-biographical memoir and a speculative political essay. It is told in 54 sonnets with footnotes, maps and illustrations guiding the reader through Phoenician history and culture, along their trading routes from China to the Baltic and into the origins of the alphabet, art, religion, philosophy, science, democracy and the colour purple plus much more. It's educational, mind-expanding and fun.

Created in North America, Europe, and the Middle East, 21st Century Sonnets is where the Shakespearean sonnet remains timeless! Marvel inside a Swiss castle; find a gold coin on the sandy shore of the Mediterranean; poetically examine the Dead Sea scrolls; and discover a wealth of poetic devices including secret acrostics, internal rhyme, allegory, alliteration, allusion, apostrophe, personification, metaphor, simile, myth, and much, much more! Sonnet sequences (and intra-sonnet forms including psalms, limericks, and quatrains of condensed meter) are Stephen Volkas expansions to the foundational Shakespearean sonnet. He won American national competitions and first place from a Member of Parliament in Canada. After reading 21st Century Sonnets a contemporary writes, aI just blew back, irradiated, from the utopiessence of your realma]kadzooks, such a treasure for the spying, sir! Who are you; from which celestial station did you fall? Well, no matter, that. Your words wide-cast the remnant radiation for us all.a

John Keats is among the greatest English poets. (He himself imagined he would be counted so!) For some readers, his odes define the essence of poetry. We also discover in Keats a great composer of sonnets. Here, for the first time published in a separate edition, are all sixty-four sonnets, the first written when Keats was eighteen, the last just five years later. Reading these poems, you'll experience the wonder of Keats's growing poetic powers; you'll feel the "shock of recognition" when you come upon the great ones. Presented with an introduction by Edward Hirsch, and accompanying explanatory notes, the sonnets stand out as a triumph of their own. "Between 1814 and 1819, John Keats wrote sixty-four sonnets. He was eighteen years old when he composed his first sonnet; he was turning twenty-four when he completed his last one. He restlessly experimented with the fourteen-line form and used it to plunge into (and explore) his emotional depths. You can sit down and read these poems in a single night and have a complete Keatsian experience—he breathes close and offers himself to us; his presence is near. You can also read them throughout your adulthood and never really get to the bottom of them. These short, durable poems are filled with the mysteries of poetry. "In the sonnets, Keats conveys the range of his interests, his concerns, his attachments, his obsessions. Some are light and improvisatory, tossed off in fifteen minutes, a moment's thought. Some are polemics, or romantic period pieces; others are brooding testaments or compulsive outpourings, which seem to expand on the page. These sonnets are replete with a sensuous feeling for nature—'The poetry of earth is never dead'—that looks back to Wordsworth and forward to Frost. They also luxuriate in the spaces of imagination—'Much have I travell'd in the realms of gold'—and trigger the daydreaming capacities of the mind." —from the Introduction by Edward Hirsch

This collection of poems, my third after Corm (Berkeley: Oyez, 1974) and Mediterranean Sonnets (Berkeley: North Atlantic Books, 1988), was written largely during the period in my life when I was a graduate student in English and American literature at the University of California, Berkeley, and then later Fulbright Lecturer to France at the University of Metz, where I taught British and American literature and poetry, and American culture, to upper division students preparing to become teachers of English in France and elsewhere. These poems therefore span a period of over twenty years, from the mid-1960s through the 1980s. I completed Mediterranean Sonnets in a flurry of intense writing in 1978 before I left for France, as I wanted this book finished and ready for publication before I set off on my year's adventure in France as Fulbright Lecturer. As can be seen by the date of its publication, it was ten years before this book of poems was published, recommended by Robert Duncan to Richard Grossinger, owner and publisher of North Atlantic Books. For this and other kindnesses, I have dedicated this book to Robert. He was a good friend and companion during this period of my life, and we spent memorable, thought-filled days together talking about poetry, about San Francisco and California as a literary region, and about the many poets and writers he knew personally, including Ezra Pound, Louis Zukofsky, Charles Olson, Jack Spicer, Kenneth Rexroth, Yvor Winters, William Carlos Williams, Robert Creeley, William Everson, Allen Ginsberg, Philip Whalen, Philip Lamantia, Michael McClure, Pauline Kael, Anaïs Nin, and Denise Levertov, just to name a top few. Robert's volubility, incredible intellect, and generosity were a rich and wonderful gift for me at this time. You can imagine how stimulating and rewarding our conversations were. He unstintingly supported my poetry.

Nearly all of the poems in this collection were written within a period of three months, consecutively, one a day. I deliberately set myself the task of writing a poem a day for as long as I could sustain the effort and keep my creative energy flowing. I had before in my writing career brief periods of intense creativity where I wrote poems every day; for example, when I was finishing my sonnet sequence, Mediterranean Sonnets, I wrote fourteen sonnets in as many days. These are memorable creative episodes because they don’t come often and the poems deriving from such an intense focused activity are always unified and consistent in a qualitative manner, by form and technique, metrics, and poetic pulsion. The imagination grasps things with unusual claritas. These sessions are always pleasurable because—as Seamus Heaney once said to me after he himself had experienced such a period of creativity and productivity—they bolster a bit the poet’s belief in his own genius. Not that genius should be measured by the bucketful, but there is a certain confirmed value in sustained performance. Many poets, of course, have achieved similar and greater feats of poetic muscularity, in the modern era Rilke for one, in writing Sonnets to Orpheus (February 2 – 5, 1922, at Chateau de Muzot in Switzerland), and William Carlos Williams, who wrote something every day for a year for Kora in Hell: Improvisations (1917- September 1918; published in 1920), and this while he was working every day as a pediatrician and general physician in his “other” profession. Williams vowed not to change a word as written; of course this did not happen, as his critical faculties prevailed, as have mine in this collection. I am myself pleased and surprised by how many of these poems stand as first written.
