Abstract: "Geschlechterspezifisches Wissen wird in der Medizin zunehmend bedeutsam. Die Implementierung dieses Wissens in die medizinische Aus-, Fort- und Weiterbildung, die klinische Praxis und medizinisch-naturwissenschaftliche Forschung war Thema der interdisziplinären Tagung an der MHH im September 2010. Einerseits wurden klinische und naturwissenschaftliche Fragen und neue Forschungsergebnisse aus unterschiedlichen medizinischen Fächern diskutiert, die auf vielfältige biologische und psychosoziale sowie kulturelle Unterschiede zwischen den Geschlechtern hinweisen und für die medizinische Praxis von zum Teil lebenswichtiger Bedeutung für PatientInnen sein können. Andererseits wurden Möglichkeiten und Stolpersteine der Implementierung dieser ständig wachsenden Wissensbestände in die medizinische Lehre anhand verschiedener Modellprojekte diskutiert, die sex- und gender-Aspekte von Gesundheit und Krankheit auf unterschiedliche Weise in Medizincurricula integriert haben." A Thai foodseller on the streets of Bangkok, a cyclo driver in a Vietnamese village, a Pahari migrant laborer in the Himalayas, a Parsi-Christian professional social worker shuttling back and forth between London and Calcutta—Trans-Status Subjects examines how these and other South and Southeast Asians affect and are affected by globalization. While much work has focused on the changes wrought by globalization—describing how people maintain foundations or are permanently destabilized—this collection theorizes the complex ways individuals negotiate their identities and create alliances in the midst of both stability and instability, as what the editors call trans-status subjects. Using gender paradigms, historical time, and geographic space as driving analytic concerns, the essays gathered here consider the various ways South and Southeast Asians both perpetuate and resist various hierarchies despite unequal mobilities within economic, social, cultural, and political contexts. Gender equality has been on the agenda of national policies of higher education within and outside the European Union (EU) for the last twenty years. In some European countries, this process was initiated early on and has brought about remarkable results, while in others progress has been slower. Different countries and institutions have focussed on different strategies for raising awareness about the discrimination of women and for increasing the number of women in aca- mia, particularly in leadership positions. Previous research on gender equality in higher education has produced many case studies about programmes at institutions of higher education in Europe and elsewhere. Different actors like the European Commission and - tional organisations have also furnished reports about national policies. Building on this material, it is now time to analyse under what conditions equality p- grammes are successful. For a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of and barriers to gender equality in higher education, we also need studies that focus on the development of gender equality policies in different countries, as well as on conditions of implementation, change of strategy, and the evaluation of - sults. Comparative studies would be another useful tool for understanding the development and success of gender equality programmes.

The establishment of the Communist social model in one part of Germany was a result of international postwar developments, of the Cold War waged by East and West, and of the resultant partition of Germany. As the author argues, the GDR's 'new' society was deliberately conceived as a counter-model to the liberal and marketregulated system. Although the hopes connected with this alternative system turned out to be misplaced and the planned economy may be thoroughly discredited today, it is important to understand the context in which it developed and failed. This study, a bestseller in its German version, offers an in-depth exploration of the GDR economy's starting conditions and the obstacles to growth it confronted during the consolidation phase. These factors, however, were not decisive in the GDR's lack of growth compared to that of the Federal Republic. As this study convincingly shows, it was the economic model that led to failure.
