Die Kolonialmedizin war ein wichtiges Instrument des Kolonialismus. Die Arbeiten, die von deutschen Autoren in der Kolonialzeit zu den medizinisch-hygienischen Zuständen in China verfasst wurden, bildeten zusammen mit der medizinischen Praxis das deutsche Medizinalwesen in China und unterstützten die Entwicklung der deutschen Kolonialexpansion. Bislang sind diese Arbeiten nicht systematisch untersucht worden; die Forschung zur deutschen Kolonialmedizin beschränkte sich auf die praktische medizinische Tätigkeit. Die Studie nimmt sich dieser Arbeiten an und erschließt und erörtert die darin zum Ausdruck kommende Einstellungen zur chinesischen Medizin. Damit wird eine schriftliche Form der Kolonialmedizin – die deutsche Darstellung der chinesischen Medizin in der Kolonialzeit – aufgezeigt. Diese Darstellung der chinesischen Medizin war häufig keine rein medizinische Frage, sondern stand darüber hinaus in Verbindung mit der damaligen Einstellung zu ihrer Kultur. So leistet die Studie auch einen Beitrag für die weitergehende Erforschung des deutschen Chinabildes und bietet dem heutigen Wissensstand zur chinesischen Medizin eine andere Perspektive.

This open access book offers an entangled history of hygiene by showing how knowledge of purity, health and cleanliness was shaped by evangelical medical missionaries and their encounters with people in West Africa. By tracing the interactions and negotiations of six Basel Mission doctors, who practised on the Gold Coast and in Cameroon from 1885 to 1914, the author demonstrates how notions of religious purity, scientific health and colonial cleanliness came together in the making of hygiene during the age of High Imperialism. The heyday of evangelical medical missions abroad coincided with the emergence of tropical medicine as a scientific discipline during what became known as the Scramble for Africa. This book reveals that these projects were intertwined and that hygiene played an important role in all three of them. While most historians have examined modern hygiene as a European, bourgeois and scientific phenomenon, the author highlights both the colonial and the religious fabric of hygiene, which continues to shape our understanding of purity, health and cleanliness to this day.

In der Hochphase des Imperialismus wurde der afrikanische Kontinent unter den Westeurop„ern aufgeteilt. Das Deutsche Kaiserreich nahm 1884 einen unwirtlichen Kstenstreifen zwischen der britischen Kolonie Goldkste und dem franz”sischen Dahomey in Besitz und errichtete dort ihre sehr direkte Herrschaft. Bereits zehn Jahre sp„ter wurde im heutigen An‚cho ein kleines deutsches Regierungskrankenhaus er”ffnet. Es war das erste deutsche Krankenhaus in den afrikanischen Kolonialgebieten berhaupt und beeinflusste die Architektur und den Betrieb sp„terer, gr”áerer H„user in Deutsch-Ostafrika und Kamerun. Die Zeit des Kolonialismus fiel mit dem Erblhen der naturwissenschaftlichen Medizin zusammen, was die Frage aufwirft, wieviel "moderne Medizin" denn "an den Rand der Welt" exportiert wurde und wie solche Ver„nderungen auf die ortans„ssige Bev”lkerung wirkten. Denn diese war auch vorher medizinisch nicht g„nzlich unversorgt geblieben. Vielmehr bestand vor der Kolonisation ein dichtes Netz an lokalen Heilkundigen, deren Grundlage eine in der Bev”lkerung tief verwurzelte animistisch-religi”se Weltanschauung war. Das Buch will die Aufgaben und das Wirken von Žrzten und Pflegepersonal des Krankenhauses von seinen Anf„ngen bis zur Aufgabe der deutschen Kolonie Togo - von 1884 bis1914 - verfolgen und sie in den Kontext einer gewaltbereiten Epoche stellen. A history of epidemic illness and political change, The Politics of Disease Control focuses on epidemics of sleeping sickness (human African trypanosomiasis) around Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika in the early twentieth century as well as the colonial public health programs designed to control them. Mari K. Webel prioritizes local histories of populations in the Great Lakes region to put the successes and failures of a widely used colonial public health intervention—the sleeping sickness camp—into dialogue with African strategies to mitigate illness and death in the past. Webel draws case studies from colonial Burundi, Tanzania, and Uganda to frame her arguments within a zone of vigorous mobility and exchange in eastern Africa, where African states engaged with the Belgian, British, and German empires. Networks in Tropical Medicine explores how European doctors and scientists worked together across borders to establish the new field of tropical medicine in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book shows that this transnational collaboration in a context of European colonialism, scientific discovery, and internationalism shaped the character of the new medical specialty. Even in an era of intense competition among European states, practitioners of tropical medicine created a transnational scientific community through which they influenced each other and the health care that was introduced to the tropical world. One of the most important developments in the shaping of tropical medicine as a specialty was the major sleeping sickness epidemic that spread across sub-Saharan Africa at the turn of the century. The book describes how scientists and doctors collaborated across borders to control, contain, and find a treatment for the disease. It demonstrates that these medical specialists' shared notions of "Europeanness," rooted in common beliefs about scientific, technological, and racial superiority, led them to establish a colonial medical practice in Africa that sometimes oppressed the same people it was created to help.

European Holocaust Studies (EHS) publishes key international research results on the murder of the European Jews and its wider contexts.
